Game of the Week

Montgomery (1-0) at Castle Park (1-0)

Six Metro Conference teams — Castle Park, Eastlake, Marian Catholic, Mar Vista, Montgomery and Southwest — will be out to continue undefeated seasons when they hit the field Friday night. Castle Park, Eastlake and Montgomery will attempt to follow in Marian Catholic’s lead by improving to 2-0. Both Mar Vista and Southwest will be looking to continue strong performances that netted them ties in their season openers last Friday.

Montgomery and Castle Park, however, tangle in the lone game pitting unbeaten teams.

The Trojans got down to serious business in their season opener by vanquishing North County power Torrey Pines, 34-7, behind two touchdowns apiece by junior DeMarco Sampson and senior Josh Samuel.

Sampson caught scoring passes of nine and seven yards from senior quarterback Chase Mc-Guire while Samuel (seven rushes, 59 yards) entered the end zone from distances of two and six yards. Ja’von Meyers scored on a 33-yard run and caught a two-point conversion, as did Sampson (who also had an interception on defense). Castle Park led 20-7 at halftime, ending the game with 27 consecutive points. The Trojans collected 324 yards in total offense — 199 rushing yards.

"Torrey Pines is probably the most disciplined team in the county. They don’t make mistakes. The only way we were going to beat them was if we played a more disciplined game," said Trojan head coach Paul Van Nostrand. "We didn’t make too many glaring errors for a first game. I think the difference was that we out-hit Torrey Pines. Our kids were flying out there, especially on defense."

Defensively, Castle Park gave up 156 total yards (116 passing yards) to the seventh-ranked Falcons, whose coach, Ed Burke, called the loss the "team’s worst in 12 years."

Kenyatta Williams broke loose for an 80-yard touchdown run to produce the only score of the first half, and the visiting Aztecs later added a 31-yard field goal to tame the Mt. Miguel Matadors, 10-6, in the season opening contest for both schools. Montgomery built a 10-0 lead before yielding a touchdown in the final period to the Matadors (0-1). Williams rushed for 138 yards on nine carries.

Chula Vista (0-1) at Southwest (0-0-1)

In putting an end to their four-year losing streak, the revitalized Raiders built a 13-0 lead at El Cajon Valley last Friday before settling for a 20-20 tie. The Southwest defense excelled, limiting the undefeated Braves (1-0-1) to five first-half yards while the Raiders piled up 221 offensive yards. Southwest received scores from running back Robert Tucker (26 yards) and quarterback Robert Riggs (five yards), both on the ground, and on a 61-yard pass play from Riggs (11-for-17, 119 yards) to receiver DeAndre Hickson. Tucker led all ball carriers in the game with 81 yards on 14 carries while teammate Keith Manassa rushed for 53 yards on 16 attempts. The downside: All three El Cajon Valley scores resulted from turnovers.

The Spartans, who many picked to contend for this year’s Mesa League title, got off to a slow start following last Friday’s 21-11 non-league loss at Valhalla. Chula Vista was hampered by 12 tackles for losses by the Norsemen (1-0). Also, standout running back Kevin Davies (1,039 yards last season) did not play for the Spartans after suffering an ankle injury in a scrimmage. Valhalla opened scoring on a nine-play, 85-yard scoring march that was capped by Daniel Hypes’ 25-yard touchdown run. After Chula Vista narrowed the score to 7-3 at halftime on a 27-yard field goal, the Norsemen struck for a game-breaking 53-yard reverse field touchdown run by quarterback Jason Hinton in the third period to lead 14-3 and then put the game away on a seven-yard run by Devon Jones in the final peroid to lead 21-3. Roderick McPeak ended the game on a high note for the Spartans by hauling in a 31-yard touchdown pass from Travis Crawford. Romero Crawford then added a successful two-point conversion run. Garrett Huffhines led Valhalla with 106 rushing yards on nine carries.

Sweetwater (0-1) at Marian Catholic (2-0)

The defending South Bay League champion Crusaders improved to 2-0 following last Friday’s 54-6 non-league victory against visiting Horizon Christian. The Crusaders completely dominated the Panthers (1-1) by scoring the game’s opening 54 points. Quarterback Mario Ledesma (3-for-3 passing, 118 yards) fired three touchdowns passes — two to Patrick Gates for 38 and 48 yards and a 30-yard pass to Omar Rodriguez. Gates (8 rushes, 80 yards) added a 14-yard scoring run  while Scottie Goodloe (4 rushes, 97 yards) scored a pair of touchdowns on a 20-yard run and 20-yard interception return. Marco Contreras (25-yard run) and Mathew Cruz (70-yard fumble return) rounded out the Marian Catholic scoring fest.

In two games, the Crusaders have outscored their opponents 81-13.

Sweetwater will be looking to gain entry into the win column for the first time this season after falling, 24-14, last Friday at Grossmont. The Foothillers rallied from an early 6-0 deficit with 17 unanswered points to take a 17-6 lead before Evin Groves scored his second touchdown of the game for Sweetwater, which then added a two-point conversion. Trailing 17-14 after three periods, the Red Devils could not get on the scoreboard again as Grossmont put the game out of reach with a fourth-quarter score. Groves (13 rushes, 143 yards) opened scoring in the game on a 70-yard run and later added a 25-yard touchdown run. SuHi quarterback Sherwin Brooks completed 13 of 18 passes for 42 yards with one interception.

Defensively, the Devils were keyed by Don Perry Groves with eight tackles (two unassisted) and Nathan Vaiafali with five tackles (two for losses). John Principato (4 rushes, 84 yards) scored twice for the Foothillers.

Eastlake (1-0) at Hilltop (0-1)

The Titans blasted host San Marcos, 29-6, as junior Josh Denton rushed for 188 yards on 23 carries and scored four touchdowns to highlight a breakout performance in his first-ever varsity game appearance. Denton, who competed at the junior varsity level last year, scored on runs of 15, 35, 29 and 66 yards. Julio DeUnamuno had eight carries for 112 yards and caught four passes from quarterback Thomas Marshall for 62 yards. Marshall competed six of 11 passes for 120 yards. As a team, Eastlake rolled past the Knights for 438 total offensive yards — 318 rushing yards and 120 passing yards. Alex Garibay kicked a 22-yard field goal.

"We had fine blocking. The backs worked hard. There were a few mistakes but overall I’m happy with our performance," said Titan coach John McFadden.

The Eastlake defense was equally adamant in placing its stamp on the win by holding San Marcos to 90 total yards — 86 yards on 29 rushes and just four passing yards (four completions in 12 attempts). The Titans totaled seven quarterback sacks and three interceptions. Anthony Howard, who caught two passes for 42 yards on offense, had two interceptions and five tackles. Emmanuel Ley had 12 tackles (six unassisted) and two sacks. Eastlake built a 15-0 lead at halftime.

The Lancers fell in their opener, 41-0, to visiting Calexico.

Centennial (Las Vegas) at Mar Vista (0-0-1)

Ron Wardrobe’s three-yard run in the final period allowed the Mariners to jump-start their season in undefeated fashion for new coach Carlos Siragusa. Mar Vista rallied from an early 12-3 deficit, holding the Centurions to just three second-half points on a 37-yard field goal. The Mariners had the chance to grab the victory but missed the point-after conversion on Wardrobe’s game-tying touchdown.

Bonita Vista (0-1) at Silverado (Las Vegas)

A 34-0 deficit proved too steep for the Barons to overcome in their 47-20 season-opening loss to third-ranked Vista. Sophomore Rowdy Arciaga passed for two touchdowns for Bonita Vista, including strikes of 36 and 14 yards. UCLA-bound Alex Ghebrasalassie had one TD reception.

Midway Baptist (0-1) at Calipatria

The Patriots lost their re-debut at the 11-man level, 42-24, last Friday at Sage Hill. Isaiah Warner scored twice for Midway Baptist, which also received a touchdown run from Mathew Turner.
