Mariners enter new era

New head coach Carlos Siragusa promises the following for the Mar Vista football program: new coaches, new attitude, new era.

The “new era” Mariners should feature team balance but not with a whole lot of depth as Siragusa takes over the reins of the MVHS program. Still, Siragusa believes his team will have a successful season.

Mar Vista ended its 2001 season 4-7 overall following a 13-0 first-round playoff loss to Serra.

The Mariners return their most experience on offense, led by senior offensive lineman Brian Dimmock, junior fullback Albert Valdez, senior quarterback Carlos Guzman, senior center Javier Arroyo, senior right end Brandon Reid and senior kicker Sergio Hernandez.

Dimmock is a returning All-South Bay League Second Team selection.

Returning leaders on defense include seniors Gary Carlson (defensive lineman), Colby Landry (linebacker) and Eddie Franco (senior strong safety). Carlson is a returning All-South Bay League Second Team selection.

Impact newcomers on offense include a pair of linemen, junior Alex Thomas and senior Chris Robinson, while senior safety Alec Turnbow is the impact newcomer on defense.

Siragusa’s key for success is simple: Dominate the line of scrimmage.
