Barons lead Metro parade of playoff winners

CHULA VISTA, Nov. 20, 2001 -- A historic playoff victory in hand, the Bonita Vista High football team will now embark on exciting, uncharted territory Friday nightt: adding to its postseason win total.

The Barons (9-2) defeated La Costa Canyon, 17-7, last Friday at Southwestern College in the first round of the San Diego Section Division I playoffs to draw second-seeded Fallbrook (6-4) in tonight’s quarterfinal round. Kick off is 7:30 p.m. at Fallbrook High.

Quarterback Alex Palacio threw for 226 yards and scored one touchdown while playing the receiver’s role on a flea-flicker play from usual receiver Al Ghebrasa-lassie John Shockley scored Bonita Vista’s first touchdown on a five-yard run after Palacio set up the score on a 62-yard completion to Detron Johnson.

The Mesa League champions rallied from a 7-2 deficit after netting a safety to start the game and then yielding an 87-yard pass play for a Mustang touchdown. Both Baron touchdowns came in the second quarter. There was no scoring in the second half of play.

La Costa Canyon ended its season 6-5.

Palacio ranks tops the section with 2,374 passing yards and 28 touchdowns while Ghebrasalassie (39 catches, 808 yards) has caught 11 touchdown passes.

Both Castle Park (8-3) and Eastlake (7-4) joined Bonita Vista in the quarterfinals with playoff wins last Friday. The Trojans downed visiting Hoover, 27-13, while the Titans bombed visiting Gross-mont, 49-18, in first-round Division II action.

Anthony Jacques (140 yards) and Robert Bell (114 yards) each scored one touchdown to help lead Castle Park, which led early 14-0. Javon Meyers and DeMarco Sampson also scored for the Trojans, who square off against second-seeded Monte Vista (9-1) Friday night.

Mark Whaley (181 yards) and Ryan Bartsch (140 yards) led Eastlake’s ferocious ground attack with two touchdowns apiece. The Titans racked up 462 rushing yards against the Foothillers (6-5) while cruising to a 28-12 halftime lead. Five players scored in the game for Eastlake, which faces top-seeded Oceanside (9-1) Friday night. Whaley leads the Titans with 1,672 yards and 20 touchdowns; Bartsch has rushed for 1,307 yards and 18 scores.

South Bay League champion Marian Catholic kicks off quarterfinal-round play Friday night with a 7:30 p.m. home game against University of San Diego High (5-6) after receiving the top seed in the Division III playoffs and a first-round bye. The Crusaders posted the school’s first-ever 10-0 regular season and lead the section in offensive point production. Patrick Gates has scored 20 touchdowns and rushed for 1,361 yards while backfield mate Eugene Alaniz has 18 touchdowns and rushed for 1,133 yards.

Sweetwater (4-7) and Mar Vista (6-5) both ended their seasons with first-round losses last Friday. The Red Devils, runners-up in the Mesa League, fell 44-15 at Carlsbad (8-3) while the Mariners dropped a 13-0 decision at Serra (7-4).

In eight-man play last Saturday, fourth-seeded Midway Baptist ended its season 7-4 following a 28-0 loss to top-seeded Julian (11-0).
