Spartans end Mariners’ streak

By Phillip Brents

CHULA VISTA, Oct. 5, 2001 -- One streak ended while another continued last Friday night at Rindone Stadium as host Chula Vista defeated Mar Vista, 28-7, in a non-league football game.

The visiting Mariners — off to a 3-0 start to the season — were bidding to record their first victory against a Spartan team in more than two decades while nailing down the school’s first 4-0 start since 1961.

However, it was Chula Vista that nailed down its opponent to break a two-game losing streak and improve to 2-2 on the season.

Kevin Davies led the Spartans with 203 yards from scrimmage. Teammate Carl Payne added 73 rushing yards as Chula Vista outgained Mar Vista 328 to 128 in total offensive yards.

The Spartans controlled the game on the ground by gaining 311 yards on 53 rushes. The Mariners were held to 27 rushing yards on 26 attempts. Chula Vista’s longest run from scrimmage went for 68 yards; Mar Vista’s longest run from scrimmage was nine yards.

Spartan quarterback Travis Craw-ford completed his only pass of the night for 17 yards and a score. The Mariners tallied 101 passing yards on nine completions in 15 attempts.

Chula Vista led 14-0 after the first quarter to inaugurate its first home game of the season. Payne scored on a two-yard run and Davies added the 68-yard scoring run. The Spartans did not let up from there as Payne added another two-yard scoring run in the second quarter for a 21-0 CV halftime lead.

The score was 28-0 after Craw-ford hit Thomas Klein from 17 yards out for the lone touchdown of the third quarter.

Mar Vista averted a shutout when J.R. Stevens scored on a 21-yard pass from Carlos Guzman in the final period.

John Hill led the Chula Vista defense with nine tackles (three solo tackles) and three sacks. John Bell had eight tackles for the Spartans, who totaled six sacks in the contest and one interception (by Pat Narvaez). Carlos Santa Maria, Payne and Adrian Limon also recorded sacks.

Chula Vista hosts Eastlake in a non-league game tonight. The Titans helped erase the bad memories from their 33-0 loss to neighborhood rival Bonita Vista two weeks ago with a 58-7 rout of visiting Sweetwater last Friday. Mark Whaley (23 carries, 224 yards) scored a career-high six rushing touchdowns to lead the Eastlake offensive blitzkrieg while Robert Montes kicked a school-record 43-yard field goal to cap the memorable high-scoring contest. Ryan Bartsch rushed for 94 yards on nine carries. Julio DeUnamuno and Danton Brown rounded out the scoring with touchdown runs.

Eastlake led 14-0 after the first period and 28-7 at halftime before adding 30 unanswered second-half points, effectively putting the game out of reach with a 17-0 edge in the third period.

Whaley leads the Titans with 666 yards in four games to go with nine touchdowns. Bartsch, who owns two rushing scores, has gained 219 yards in two game appearances.

Castle Park (2-2) won its second game in a row by downing host Montgomery, 65-6, last Friday amidfog and a power outage. The Trojan offense scored eight of the team’s nine touchdowns on the night with the defense also figuring prominently in the outcome with two fumble recoveries by James Chudy, a sack by Diego Herroz, a fumble recovery by Chris Riggs and an interception by DeMarco Sampson, who also returned a punt for a 50-yard score.

Junior quarterback Chase McGuire passed for two touchdowns while running for another. Anthony Jacques, Ishajuwan Saunders, Robert Bell and Jevon Meyers all scored rushing touchdowns. Bell, who has totaled 407 rushing yards in four games, led the team with two scores.

Castle Park hosts winless Southwest tonight. The Raiders (0-4) are coming off a 55-0 loss to unbeaten Marian Catholic last week as the Crusaders (4-0) received three touchdowns from Patrick Gates.

Montgomery plays at Marian Catholic tonight while Hilltop hosts Sweetwater to round out the Metro’s non-league schedule.

Eric Alaniz paces the Crusaders with 504 rushing yards and six touchdowns while Gates has added 496 yards and seven scores. Marco Contreras, who scored two touchdowns against Southwest, has rushed for 425 yards and seven touchdowns.

Bonita Vista downs Hilltop, 31-6, in rolling to third straight victory

The Bonita Vista High football team rolled to its third consecutive victory by defeating host Hilltop, 31-6, in a non-league contest last Friday. Ivan Salzedo scored two touchdowns while rushing for 183 yards and quarterback Alex Palacio threw for two touchdowns while passing for 164 yards to lead the Barons, who enter tonight’s non-league contest against likewise 3-1 Mar Vista at Southwestern College having outscored their last two opponents 64-6.

Bonita Vista led Hilltop (1-3) by a score of 24-0 before Mike Yaomoto scored on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter.

E. J. Stoike (4 catches, 86 yards) opened scoring in the game for the Barons by making a seven-yard touchdown reception and Salzedo followed with his first scoring run of the night, taking the ball across the goal line from five yards out. Kevin Shields then tacked on a 24-yard field goal and Detron Johnson added a 25-yard touchdown catch for the 24-0 edge. After Yaomoto’s TD, Salzedo answered with a matching one-yard scoring run.

Salzedo leads the Barons with 592 rushing yards on the season to go with six touchdowns while Palacio has thrown for 682 yards and eight scores — four to Johnson.

Hilltop hopes to regain the winning touch tonight against visiting Sweetwater. The Lancers routed Southwest, 39-7, on Sept. 14 as Brandon Grant scored three times.
