San Ysidro High gets its first football coach: Marian Catholic's Mike David

Posted April 24, 2002

The Metro Conference’s newest member — San Ysidro High School — has named its first football coach and he comes onboard with a presence few can dispute.

In 10 years at Marian Catholic High School, Mike David posted an 88-32 record, inclusive of playoff competition. His teams won shares or outright possession of five Harbor League titles before returning to Metro play two years ago, winning last year’s South Bay League title. The Crusaders advanced to the San Diego Section division championship game in five of the last six years, winning two CIF titles.

In taking Marian Catholic to the pinnacle of success, he helped build from the ground up. He will undertake that same task at San Ysidro High.

“It’s a great opportunity to get the start with freshmen only and build a program from there,” David said. “It might be similar. At Marian, we started working real hard with the freshmen classes coming in. It will be the same.”

San Ysidro High will play a 10-game freshman-only schedule its inaugural football season, moving to freshman and junior varsity schedules during the school’s second year. San Ysidro High will field a full varsity level schedule during the school’s third year when it comprises freshmen through junior classes.

Classes at the new school, which will observe a year-round schedule, will start in July.

David will teach social studies and physical education at the new school. He said he will not focus on won-loss record the first year.

“We’re going to come in and establish strong fundamentals with the players, especially the first year,” David said. “We want to get the players working together as a team. If we take care of that, the rest will take care of itself on the field in terms of results.”

San Ysidro will play its first-ever freshman football game on Friday, Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. at Coronado High School. David chuckled at the mention of the significance of the program’s red-letter opening day. Games follow Sept. 20 against CETYS from Tijuana (at a site to be determined), Sept. 26 at Hilltop High, Oct. 3 at Castle Park High, Oct. 10 at Eastlake High, all at 3 p.m. San Ysidro will play its final five games of the season on its home turf: Oct. 17 against Bonita Vista High; Oct. 24 against Southwest High; Oct. 31 against Marian Catholic High; Nov. 7 against Montgomery High; and Nov. 14 against Chula Vista High.

David called the school’s stadium “state of the art.”

Two former Marian Catholic coaches have joined David at San Ysidro High: defensive coordinator Sergio Rhodes and wide receivers coach Jim Siegfried. Former University City head coach Ron Morgan, most recently the offensive line coach at Torrey Pines High, as well as Crusaders alumni Steve Bosset and Oscar Paredes, round out the staff thus far.

David said he will retain fond memories of his decade of service at Marian Catholic High.

“I’m really proud of what we accomplished. We had some outstanding players come through. I’m happy with the past 10 years. It’s been a real pleasure to have worked at the school,” he said.

Besides head football coach at Marian Catholic, David also served as the school’s athletic director.

The timing of the position change comes at an awkward time in a way, according to David. The Crusaders return 15 starters this coming fall, including three running backs who all produced more than 1,000 yards last year as well as a quarterback who threw for 1,000 yards.

“It’s a tough year to leave,” David said.

Besides football, San Ysidro High plans to offer the following freshman sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, track & field and wrestling.

As for the school’s chief rival its first season, David said that remains to be determined.
