Mesa League

Montgomery (3-5, 1-1) at Bonita Vista (2-0, 6-2)

The Barons host the Aztecs at Southwestern College in a bid to get back to the business at hand of securing this year’s Mesa League title after last Friday’s 56-42 non-league loss to South Bay League leader Marian Catholic. Quarterback Alex Palacio threw five touchdown passes in the game for Bonita Vista to finish the game with 275 yards. Al Ghebrasalassie caught three scoring passes, including receptions of 47, 20 and 58 yards, to finish the night with 158 yards on seven catches. For the season, Palacio has passed for 1,571 yards and a conference high 21 touchdowns. Ghebrasalassie leads Baron receivers with 507 yards and nine touchdowns. Detron Johnson has 452 receiving yards and seven touchdowns while E.J. Stoike has compiled 451 yards and four touchdowns. Ivan Salzedo leads Bonita Vista with 1,086 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Aztecs snapped a four-game losing streak with a crucial come-from-behind 35-29 homecoming victory last Friday against Chula Vista. Montgomery racked up a decisive 384-187 advantage in total offensive yards, rushing for 194 yards on 29 plays and passing for an additional 190 yards. The Aztec defense held the Spartans to 12 passing yards while yielding 175 rushing yards on 45 carries. Kenyatta Williams paced Montgomery with 181 total yards, including a 54-yard scoring pass from quarterback Ian Pizarro, who scored on an 18-yard run. Despite the sizable edge in total yards, the Aztecs were forced to erase a 29-27 deficit in the late stages of the contest. Pizarro has thrown for 1,358 yards and 11 touchdowns. Williams owns 597 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Chula Vista (4-4, 1-1) at Sweetwater (3-5, 2-1)

The Red Devils enter the traditional rivalry game having won three of their last four games.

After last Friday’s 35-29 league setback at Montgomery, the Spartans now find themselves in a battle to gain a share of the league title. Chula Vista had to do just that against the Aztecs but fell short after recovering from a 20-9 halftime deficit to take leads of 23-20 and 29-27. Kevin Davies (22 rushes, 87 yards) scored two touchdowns rushing against Montgomery after opening the game with a 99-yard kick return. Julian Smith also scored on a short run for the Spartans, who suffered the loss despite finishing with four defensive takeaways in the game. John Bell recovered two fumbles while leading the team with 12 tackles.

South Bay League

Castle Park (5-3, 2-1) at Mar Vista (4-4, 0-2)

The Trojans treated a homecoming crowd to a festive victory last Friday against defending league champion Eastlake. Castle Park’s passing attack came alive courtesy of junior Chase McGuire, who completed seven of 10 attempts for 117 yards while also scoring twice on runs. His 25-yard bootleg play in the fourth period sealed the win for the Trojans, who outscored Eastlake 31-14 after breaking a 7-7 first quarter tie between the teams. Defensive played a prominent role as Chris Riggs returned an intercepted pass 79 yards to jump-start scoring in the game. Anthony Jacques (42-yard pass from McGuire) and Ishajuwan Saunders (15-yard run) highlighted Castle Park’s offensive showcase with touchdowns. The Trojans have allowed a conference low 80 points in eight games. Robert Bell leads Castle Park with 866 rushing yards and has scored seven times.

The Mariners are coming off a 21-0 shutout loss at Hilltop and have dropped four of their last five games after opening the season 3-0.

Hilltop (2-6, 1-1) at Marian Catholic (8-0, 2-0)

The Crusaders earned bragging rights to the mythical conference championship title after defeating Mesa League leader Bonita Vista 56-42 on the Barons’ home turf last Friday. Eugene Alaniz and Patrick Gates both scored three touchdowns apiece while quarterback Mario Ledesma passed for two scores while running for another to lead the Marian Catholic blitzkrieg. Gates recorded an 88-yard kickoff return to start scoring in the game. The Crusaders never trailed, amassing 28 second quarter points en route to taking a 35-21 halftime lead. Gates collected 136 yards on 20 carries and Alaniz gained 122 yards on 22 attempts. For the season, Alaniz leads Marian Catholic with 16 touchdowns while rushing for 934 yards while Gates leads the Crusaders with 1,106 rushing yards and has scored 14 touchdowns. Marian Catholic ranks second in the San Diego Section in point-scoring with 386 points in eight games for a 48.3 points-per-game average. Jesse Maldonado leads the section in kick-scoring with 54 points (48 extra points, 2 field goals).

The Lancers snapped a five-game losing streak with an impressive victory against visiting Mar Vista last week, taking a 14-0 first quarter lead on touchdown runs of 4 and 9 yards. Sylas Sandoval completed scoring in the game in the third period on a nine-yard TD pass.

Non-League

Southwest (0-8, 0-3) at Eastlake (4-4, 1-2)

The Titans likely saw their chances to repeat as South Bay League champions evaporate following last Friday’s 38-21 loss at Castle Park. Eastlake appeared ready to open scoring in the pivotal matchup but an interception return instead put the Trojans, buoyed by a homecoming crowd, on the scoreboard . The Titans received two touchdown runs from Mark Whaley (10 and 24 yards) and another touchdown run from Ryan Bartsch (62 yards). Whaley has rushed for 1,165 yards and 13 touchdowns this year while Bartsch, in two less games, has gained 876 yards and scored 11 touchdowns.

The Raiders enjoyed their biggest offensive output of the season last Friday in a 48-22 Mesa League loss to visiting Sweetwater. Tony Crenshaw threw a 21-yard touchdown pass and ran for a one-yard score.
