CHULA VISTA, Oct. 12, 2001 -- Sophomore Bryan Flitcraft scored a team-high three goals, including the game-winner midway through the final period, to highlight the Chula Vista High boys water polo team’s 8-7 non-league victory against Morse at the Parkway pool. The Spartans extended their winning streak to two games following a 14-5 win at Mar Vista in Metro Conference play on Oct. 10.

Flitcraft, who also drew an assist in the game, scored twice on lob shots but ripped in what proved to be the game-winner from the wing with the teams tied 7-7. Morse’s Tye Waller II had knotted the score after converting an errant clearance by Chula Vista just moments prior to Flitcraft’s game-clinching goal.

Spartan senior goalie Chris Young recorded 12 saves in the game against the Tigers after making 23 saves in the victory two days earlier against Mar Vista. Young tipped the final shot of the game over the crossbar at the buzzer to preserve the victory after Morse received a restart at midtank with two seconds remaining in regulation play.

Jack Fritz and Gregorio Flores both scored two goals and one assist while Jeremy Olaso and Jon Hamblin both added a goal and assist to round out the Chula Vista offense against Morse, which held an early 3-1 advantage in the back-and-forth contest.

"I think our offense was moving a little more than it has been in the past. They (the Tigers) had a couple good guys. Defensively, we kept the score down. We played a better game than that against Mission Bay," explained Spartan coach David Hunt in reference to a 14-4 non-league loss to Mission Bay on Oct. 5.

Chula Vista improved to 4-10 after recording the victory against Morse.

Morse, which fell to 0-7 on the season, received three goals from Waller and two goals each from Anthony Smith and David Smith. The Tigers erased a 1-0 deficit on a goal by Chula Vista’s Flores by reeling off consecutive goals from Waller, David Smith and Anthony Smith. Hamblin ended the Morse run with a goal to trim the Tigers’ lead to 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Olaso tied the game after taking a breakaway feed from Young to start the second period and Flitcraft scored on a lob from the outside to give the Spartans their second lead of the matchup at 4-3. Fritz then scored to put Chula Vista ahead 5-3 but Anthony Smith beat Young on a backhand shot to bring Morse back to within one goal at 5-4. Flitcraft matched that goal with another lob but Waller answered with an outside shot to once again cut the Spartan lead to a single goal. Chula Vista received some breathing room when Flores scored on a Morse kickout to up the score to 7-5 but the Tigers were not finished, scoring the first of two unanswered goals to end the third period with the Spartans in front 7-6.

Olaso (5 goals) and Flores (4 goals) led Chula Vista against Mar Vista while Hamblin and Danny Lopez scored two goals apiece and James Belcher added one goal. Against Mission Bay, Olaso had two goals while Hamblin and Flores had one goal each. Young made 14 saves in the loss to the Bucs.
