Hilltop's Davila ends prep career with fourth all-state finish

Hilltop High senior Desiree Davila concluded her prep cross country career with her fourth all-state finish by placing 10th in her division in last Saturday's California cross country championship meet in Fresno.

Davila, a four-time Metro Conference and three-time San Diego Section divisional champion, turned in a time of 18:30 in the girls Division II race on the 3.1-mile course amid chilly temperatures. She earned previous place-finishes of second, fourth and fifth at the state meet after finishing third in the section's divisional race this year.

Two other South County qualifiers -- Bonita Vista's Dustin Whitson and Sweetwater's Mark Dionella -- ran well but finished farther back in the pack at last Saturday's state finals. Whitson, who finished ninth in the boys Division I race at the prior week's section championships, was 67th in 16:22 while Dionella, who was 10th in the same Division I San Diego Section race, placed 146th out of 205 runners in 17:09.

More than 1,600 runners competed in all divisions at this year's state finals.

Vista's Ryan Montez was the highest San Diego Section place-finisher at this year's state meet, clocking 15:27 for 3.1 miles to finish second by a stride to Clovis' J.J. Duke in the boys Division I race in which the San Diego Section team champion Panthers placed third overall. Ramona's Loretta Kilmer, the San Diego Section Division II individual champion, was third ahead of Davila in 17:46 while Francis Parker's Angela Peterson was third in the girls Division V race in 19:10.

Davila was one of three section runners to earn top 10 finishes in the girls Division II race, also joining El Capitan's Jasmine Marquez (7th, 18:19). San Dieguito Academy's Jenna Timinsky was fifth in the girls Division III race in 18:36.

Taylor Williams of Helix was sixth in the boys Division II race in 15:40. Also earning all-state honors was reigning San Diego Section Division I individual champion Abadir Barre from Mt. Carmel, who finished 10th in 15:43 in the boys Division I race.

Top runners will now compete in tomorrow's Western Regional meet at Mt. San Antonio for the right to advance to the following Saturday's national championship meet at Disney World in Florida. The top eight finishers in the seeded races advance to nationals.
