Crusaders wins Division 4 CIF title

By Markus Berzen

CHULA VISTA, March 2, 2002 -- Third-seeded Marian Catholic shocked top-seeded Santa Fe Christian in this year's San Diego Section Division IV boys soccer championship final at Southwestern College. The Crusaders played their best game of the season and ended up taking home the championship after winning the final game by a crushing 5-1 score.

Santa Fe Christian started the game in good fashion as the team’s quick and powerful wingers cut through the Marian Catholic defense on several occasions in the first 15 minutes of the game. It looked like it would be a long day for the Crusaders as SFC took the lead as J.T. Bailey rolled the ball into the back of the net in the 17th minute following an unfortunate mistake by the Crusader defense.

The Crusaders’ defense took charge after the goal, however. Despite several attempts by the SFC forwards, good positioning and skilled tackling kept the Eagles at bay. Marian’s two central defenders, Oscar Perides and Santiago Cruz, did a good job of turning the game around for the Crusaders.

Perides was particularly good and he made three or four perfect tackles in very crucial situations. The calm and skilled Crusader defense took the edge off SFC’s attacks.

Instead of continued pressure from the Eagles, Marian Catholic scored the equalizer as Amir Vafaee scored his first goal of the game. The game went back and forth the rest of the first half, but the second half belonged to Vafaee and Marian’s playmaker and team captain, Dustin Guerrero.

Marian took the lead in the 52nd minute when Vafaee scored his second goal of the game on a header from close range. Marian was awarded a penalty in the middle of the second half and Guerrero made no mistake as he scored the 3-1 goal. Vafaee scored his hat trick goal soon thereafter to make it 4-1. Guerrero kicked the last nail in the coffin, on yet another penalty kick, that made it 5-1.

“All the guys gave it their all and 5-1 against a team like Santa Fe is just amazing,” said Marian coach Rene Ortiz.

It was truly a team victory. Every single player played well, from defense to the midfield to the offense. Where the Eagles had problems on certain positions, Marian did not have any weak links.

“The whole team was great,” said Ortiz.

“This was one of my best games of the year,” said Vafaee, who was one of the best players of the game with his hat trick. Guerrero was also outstanding with two penalty goals and three assists.

The 5-1 victory was truly a remarkable show of strength, commitment and teamwork and there is no doubt that Marian Catholic is worthy to be called this year’s Division IV CIF champions.
