Favorites deliver at Metro track and field finals

CHULA VISTA, May, 10, 2002 -- The favorites came through big as the season’s top athletes faced each other at last Friday’s Metro Conference track and field finals at Eastlake High School.

The finals were divided into two separate competitions between the South Bay League and Mesa League. The top two athletes in each event went on to today’s CIF preliminaries at Valley Center and Poway high schools, with the third-place finishers also having a chance to advance to the CIF preliminaries depending on their individual results.

In boys Mesa League finals, Sweetwater had 16 top two finishers in as many events. The Mesa League 100-meter dash final was perhaps the most exciting event of the day as Southwest’s Tony Crenshaw narrowly defeated Montgomery’s Adrian Trujillo by 5/100 of a second. Trujillo won the 200 meter dash to qualify in two separate events.

In the Mesa League girls finals, the running events belonged to Chula Vista and Bonita Vista, but Sweetwater showed its strength in the field events. Alex Sims of Chula Vista won both hurdles events as Chula Vista captured seven out of nine running events. The outstanding Aigamarie Taumua of Sweetwater took first place in shot put and discus in her usual overwhelming show of strength. Denise French of Bonita Vista won the long jump and finished second in the 100-meter dash after Chula Vista’s Marla Mason.

In the South Bay League boys finals, Eastlake drew the longest straw with 17 athletes recording top two finishes. Eastlake’s D’Andre Byrd was one of the highlights of the day, winning both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Troy Swier of Mar Vista, who might be the most dominant athlete in any single event, outclassed the opposition in both the mile and the 2-mile races.

In the South Bay League girls finals, Eastlake was practically untouchable. The team, which has gone undefeated this season, won 13 out of 16 events and grabbed eight second-place finishes. Tiara Rae was Eastlake’s most successful athlete of the day, winning both long jump and the triple jump.
