Pair of Badgers take gold medals in wrestling
Bryan Scambler and Arturo Casillas, both of the Chula Vista Badgers
Wrestling Club, went undefeated to capture gold medals in wrestling. An
incoming junior at Hilltop High School, Scambler will compete July 20-26 in
Fargo, N.D. as part of Team California in the USA Wrestling Cadet Nationals.
He won his 125-pound weight class with a 3:35 pin against Torrey Pines'
Brandon Richland in high school competition last Saturday at Mt. Miguel High
School. Casillas came back the next day to capture the 101-pound Schoolboy
Division freestyle title with a 1:20 fall against Robert Woodard of the San
Diego Mighty Mites.
Top-seeded in his weight class, Scambler finished 3-0 in the tournament,
recording an 8-3 decision against Anthony Mayberry of the San Diego Power
Masters in his first match and following with a 4:52 pin against Alfonso
Berriel of the Power Masters in the semifinals.
Scambler, who finished second in the state in both freestyle and Greco-Roman
competition earlier this year, has now wrestled for the cycle in State Games
competition, adding a gold medal to silver and bronze medals he captured at
the two previous tournaments.
"It's a natural progression. The idea is to progress every year. You've got
to take small steps before taking big steps. I think we're right on track,"
said Jerry Matsumoto, a coach with the Badgers program.
Daniel Pino, also representing the Badgers, finished third in his 275-pound
weight class after pinning Torrey Pines' Jon Mendis in 5:09. Pino went 3-1
in the tournament.
