Cariati lies on the Ionian coast  between the remains of ancient Sybaris
and the temple of Hera Lacinia at Crotone. It is a town of Byzantine origin,                 a former centre  of bishopric, reign  of the Spinelli princes.

Beside the evidence of antique splendour brought to light by the excavations around the Brezia tomb (IV cent. A.C.), the bastions with the eight circular towers of Byzantine era, with successive fortification by the Ruffo and Spinelli princes(XIV-XVI cent.), the church of the Osservanti in late gothic style (XV cent.), the Cathedral (XV cent.), in a more modern key Cariati possesses an interesting port for fishing and tourist purposes, a hospital and a modern law cout...

State schools in the town are: the Scientific High School, the Professional Institute for Industry and Crafts, two didactis circles, Middle School 1 and Middle School 2 (the latter being first a branch of Middle School 1, and subsequently obtaining independence in 1987).

Middle School 1 called "E. De Amicis" was founded as a school for professional preparation and it became a middle school in 1962.

In the 1980s there were 30 classes, currently reduced to 15, because of the independence given to Middle School 2 (six classes) and emigration of young comples to central - nothern areas of the country.

Six classes are full time, six are experimental bilingual classes (French and English), three work to normal schooltime. English is taught to various degrees in all the classes, French is taught in nine.   The school has numerous laboratories ( computer science, linguistic, audiovisual, technical scientific, pottery), all of which are modern and used by all the classes at least one day a week, set up thanks to specific projects financed mainly by the Calabria Region and the Ministry of Education.

The school's mission is characterized by the constant search for innovation and research, to protect the basic values of tradition, the person, the family in the socio-economic context, participation and transparency.
