It was founded by Late Shri Balakrishna Kothari, a well-known businessman and a philanthropist of Chennai, in memory of his mother, with the co-operation , assistance and support of his friend, philosopher and guide, Professor S R Govindarajan, an educator par excellence. At present Shri Moolchand Kothari is the Chairman and Smt. Rajam K Rao is the Honorary Director of the Institution.

Inauguration of the Academy

The Academy is an Autonomous body, organising its own programmes of meaningful education, providing opportunities and training for academic excellence and vocational skills to women of different social backgrounds.
It offers post-graduate and undergraduate diploma courses in Early Childhood Education,Fashion Design, Home-science, Nutrition and Dietetics, Informatics, Interior Decoration and Secretarial subjects. Certificate courses offered are Cosmetology, Creche Management, Interior Decoration, Spoken English, Embroidery, Yarn craft, Cookery and Bakery.
A system of continuous evaluation by way of internal assessment, as well as end-semester examinations is taken into account for assessing and grading the performance of a student.
The academy has an Alumni Association that registers the names of the students, and efforts are made to secure placements for them. The success of the Alumni in their careers bears testimony to the fact that the Institution is accepted and appreciated by the community.
The Campus is located in the heart of the city, in a relaxed, and comfortable atmosphere. The Hemi Bai Mangharam Hostel for Women in the campus can accommodate about 100 students.

Registration for admission from May onwards for the Diploma programmes.

A Workshop was conducted by the Dept. of Fashion Design, in collaboration with the Professors and students from the University of Portsmouth, UK, and the NIFT, Chennai. Details of the Workshop can be seen in the Section 'Fashion Design'

LAST YEAR
Our bit to help the underprivileged.
As a part of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the Academy, the students and staff spent some time with the children of the Charitable Organisation, Udavum Karangal, Chennai, on 6th Aug 2005.
