ICPMM41cAINCORPORATE TEXT INTO MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS Fonts & Font Families - Most fonts are classified into certain font families, based on the shape and size and specific features of the letters. Usually designed to be used in combination and exhibiting similarities in design. One member of the family may be italic, another bold, another condensed or using small caps.
True Type Fonts -TrueType fonts contain complete packs of information on the fonts, while Postscript fonts contain some information, but the brains are located within the Adobe Type Manager available free if you purchase any of Adobe's programs.
Typography - Typography can be defined as the theory and practice of letter and typeface design. In other words, it is an art concerned with design elements that can be applied to the letters and text (as opposed to images, tables, or other visual enhancements) on a printed page.
The Effective Use of Text - Text on the web is one of the great unknowns - it is almost definite that each person viewing your web site will see it a little bit differently. If someone viewing your web page doesn't have the fonts that you have selected, their browser will simply substitute in a font that it does have. That font may be completely unsuitable. As a general rule, sticking with common fonts like Arial, Times, Times New Roman, Helvetica, or Verdana.
When & How to use Decorative Text - Restrict the use of Decorative Text to titles and headings. Keep body text in a simple common font.
Matching fonts to the intended audience - It is very easy to get carried away and make use of those decorative or unusal fonts you found on the web but always remember who will be looking at you site. Older people like clear defined fonts that are easy to read while teenagers love fonts that are fun to look at.
Effective Layout - The KISS principle (Keep it Simple Stupid) is a great rule of thumb for Web Design. The space surrounding blocks of text is just as important as other factors such as appropriate use of color, type and graphics.
Replacing or supplementing text with images - The old saying "A picture is worth a thousand words" is just as applicable in web design. Text can be used effectively to provide additional information, such as price or ordering details.
Text used in both multimedia & printed formats - Most newspapers follow the format of using Arial for all headlines and Times New Roman for the articles. This is because the Serif type font is easy to read on the printed page. The reverse is true on a Web Page and serif type fonts are harder to read. It is better to choose a sans serif type font for your site as it is easier to read.
Embedding fonts into presentations - You must be aware of problems you may have moving presentations from one computer to another. If the font has been embedded then the font will be correctly displayed. If not, then the computer will substitue a font which may be unsuitable and detract from your carefully laid out presentation.
