Homage
to Louis (no, not Karl) Marx...
Most of the uppity
and annoying "serious" model railroaders I know look down their nose at
Marx. They call it "cheap junk." I got into collecting Marx mostly
because of this attitude -- my rebellious nature likes being uppity and
annoying right back, because I
collect real toys that have
actually been played with by
a child (as opposed to an
adult who refuses to grow up) and therefore have much more character that those
awful, excessively-priced "mint in box" Lionel things.
Marx
trains are unapologetically inexpensive toys. They look like toys, they
run like toys, and they feel like toys. They are almost indestructible,
no matter how badly you abuse them. Most of them have actually been
played with by children, and show clear scars as a result. My
philosophy is, if you're going to have three-rail track, why build a
fancy, scenicked layout? It's a toy, so just slap it on a piece of
plywood and play with it!
