Delaware Water Gap Excursions
One August 30th Steamtown National Historic Site operated its first trip to the Delaware Water Gap, a site also managed by the National Park Service.  The first of the 100-mile round-trips operated under dark skies and heavy rain at times.  At "Point of Gap" passengers dissembarked for a layover and lunch in the heart of the scenic recreation area.  Two other excursions (with much better weather) ran  on October 11 and 25 to the same location, but would instead allow passengers to detrain in East Stroudsburg, PA a few miles west so they could enjoy the "Depot Days" festival.  All photographs from October 11th, accept as noted.
CP 2317 casts a plume of smoke and steam over downtown Scranton.  Diesel were on hand for that extra push on the grade between Scranton and Tobyhanna.
Here we see the special passing through Moscow, the regular destination for Steamtown excursion trains.
The special excursion has crested the steepest parts of the grade and is seen rolling through Gouldsboro, PA.
At Tobyhanna the diesel helpers would be removed from the train for the downhill portion of the trip into East Stroudsburg and the Delaware Water Gap.  The special is seen here nearing the Tobyhanna Yard.
Without the deisel helpers, the special is rolling through Analomink, PA, a few miles weat of East Stroudsburg.
The town of East Stroudsburg boasts a restored station, authentic DL&W steel water tank and the last wooden tower on the old Lackawanna Main as seen here on the August 30th trip.
The scenic wonder of the Delaware Water Gap is enjoyed by passengers on this train as it approached the end of the run at Slateford Yard.  Here the diesels will be put back on the train for the return to East Stroudsburg and Scranton.
