Page 4. Growing out young Discus.
April-July 2001.

Everything was all set up.
I changed my water-change system to the automatic drip system,
which I talked about a few pages back.
Now its just feeding them and watching them grow!
I am feeding Discus Diet, (which is a beefheart mix)
tetra bits (not too often) and Hikari bloodworms.

I had a bout of Planaria and Hydra in June, which I suspect I got
from some frozen bloodworms (not hikari).
they were wiped out with a salt bath.
salt killed the planaria, the hydra are still there, but not a problem..
Other than that, its all been going smoothly! :)

For awhile I had a piece of driftwood with a few fake plants
attached in the tank. But it got totally covered with Hydra.
so I took it out before the salt treatment, and havent put it back yet.
im going to leave the tank empty until the fish are full-grown.
Easier to clean that way anyway..

The fish started out a dull red-brown, with no other coloration visible.
But as they have grown other colors have been slowly coming out!
Discus start out rather bland looking and get MUCH more colorfull
as they grow! (well..I wouldnt even call them "bland" when young,
they are still beautiful even then! :)
now they are much redder, and blue and deep red stripes are appearing
in the head and fins..they look better every day!

Well thats it for now! as I write this (July 29)
my biggest fish is about 3 inches long.

I had to cover up the two "long" sides because the fish always
seemed too skittish and shy. I think having the tank wide-open on
3 sides like that was a bit much for them. so now the long sides
are covered with paper and they are much happier about it!
I will simply leave the paper on until they are full grown, then slowly
try to get them used to it without the paper..

More pictures coming soon!
