The Wildlife of Cussen Park
Introduction
Because of the changes to the environment of the Northern Plains of Victoria, the animals and plants found today in Cussen Park do not represent a natural community, in their composition, numbers or the natural roles that they played in the ecosystem prior to European Settlement. Nevertheless there is an amazing diversity of plants and animals considering the areas recent
history. The aim of Cussen Park is not to attempt to fully recreate the environment prior to European Settlement, but to re-introduce and manage as much as possible the "natural elements" of the park environment to mimic the environments found naturally on the Northern Plains of Victoria. In the process it is hoped that as many native species as possible can benefit from the Park and thrive within it, benefiting these species, the broader environment and the community of Tatura by providing a harmonious environment in which people can enjoy living with nature.
Of the most notable features of Cussen Park is the birdlife attracted to the managed wetlands, permanent water and diverse habitat features. Facilities such as professionally constructed birdhides and a raised platform allow fantastic views of the park allowing many people to get as close as they are ever likely to get, and to observe these fascinating creatures going about their business. One of the rewarding features of the Cussen Park experience is the knowledge that the birds are free to fly away if they choose.
