Scottish Country Dancing was introduced into Central PA in the early
1700's by Scottish immigrants. It was gradually supplanted by newer
dancing styles and eventually disappeared entirely. It was revived in
1982 by the organization of the Harrisburg Scottish Country Dance Society
under the leadership of Douglas Rea. The Society also reintroduced Scottish
Country Dancing to the traditional instruments of Scotland to Central
PA, featuring the great highland bagpipes at its 12th Night dances.
The year 2000 saw the reintroduction of dancing to a Gaelic singing
style called puirt a' beul which means "mouth music".
Our mission is to teach, promote and, above all, have fun with Scottish
Country Dancing. We have regular classes, do dance demonstrations, host
our own dances and go to dances hosted by other Scottish Country Dance
groups. The main focus of the group is neither instruction nor performance,
but FUN!!
