As with skills, perks and flaws
required some alterations to fit in the Middle Earth setting. In the
tables below, any perk in red can only be taken
during character creation. New or modified perks and flaws are listed
with an asterik and are described at the end of the table.

* These are new perks or perks that are changed from the standard Alternity rules:
Renown: This perk replaces Celebrity. When this perk is purchased, the character must choose one appropriate realm in which it applies: for example, Gondor or Erebor.
Faith: Although the Free Peoples of Middle Earth are highly spiritual, they do not appear to possess much in the way of formalized religion. Iluvatar is rarely mentioned by name, venerated but not worshipped. A character with Faith possesses a link to the more active sacred beings of Middle Earth--the Valar or perhaps their Istari (Wizards).
Treasure Hoard: This perk replaces Filthy Rich. It basically functions the same, though the character should have a reason for his vast riches (as well as a place to store them).
Looks Fair: This perk replaces Good Looks. It functions the same.
Ageless Memory: This perk replaces Photo Memory. It functions the same.
Magic Awareness: This perk replaces Psionic Awareness. It functions the same, except that it only senses dark sorcery and the specific powers mentioned in the Magic section.
Tough as Iron: This perk replaces Tough as Nails. It functions the same.
Dwarf Gift: This is a new perk. Sometime in his background history, the character inherited, earned, or perhaps merely found either a mithril weapon or a mithril coat of mail armor.
Elf Friend: This is a new perk available only to Man, Dwarf, or Hobbit characters. Sometime in his background history, the character rendered some service to an elven realm. Contrary to the normal elven custom of keeping outsiders at a distance, the character is welcome within that realm (-2 bonus to Interaction checks in that realm).
Elf Gift: This is a new perk. Sometime in his background history, the character inherited, earned, or perhaps merely found either an elf cloak, elf blade, or star crystal.
Hands of the King: This is a new perk available only to Warrior or Ranger Dunedain Man characters who have also purchased the new Man of the Westernesse perk. The character is somehow descended from the Dunedain royal line, either as a scion of the Numenorean ruling family (in the Second Age) or as one of the lost heirs of Anarion or Isildur (in the Third Age). As such, he possesses the mark of royalty: a natural healing power in his touch. The character automatically receives Rank 1 in the Magic specialty skill Healing (but not the Magic broad skill). He may use this skill as described in the Magic section, but he may never increase it beyond Rank 1.
Man of the Westernesse: This is a new perk available only to Dunedain Man characters. The character is descended from an ancient Numenorean family. He carries the blessed bloodline dating back to the First Age and has a lifespan of up to 250 years; Dunedain characters may have up to four perks maximum. Without this perk, a Man character is merely of a lesser Mannish stock (such as the Northmen of Eotheod or Rhovanion) with a mortal life-span of less than 100 years.
Noble Eldar: This is a new perk available only to Elf characters. For 4 skill points, the character is a "Grey Elf" (Sinda). For 6 skill points, the character is a "High Elf" (Noldo). Without this perk, an Elf character is merely one of the "wood elves" (descended from the Nandor or Laiquendi) from Lorien or Mirkwood.
Pure Heart: This is a new perk available only to Hobbit or Man
(except those with the new Man of the Westernesse perk)
characters--other races are too long-lived to possess such natural innocence.
For 2 skill points, the hero receives a -1 bonus on all corruption checks (see
Corruption); for 4 skills points, a -2 bonus; for 6 skill points, a -3 bonus.

* These are new flaws or flaws that are changed from the standard Alternity rules:
Cursed Artifact: This flaw replaces Alien Artifact. The character owns a lesser ring. He automatically accrues 1 point of Corruption and must make a Corruption check each time he uses the ring (see Corruption). While worn it grants a small benefit (for example, -1 bonus on action checks). Whenever the character is in a situation in which it is particularly tempting to use the ring, he must make a successful Resolve-mental check to resist wearing it.
Impoverished Exile: This flaw replaces Dirt Poor. It basically functions the same.
Infamy: For this flaw, the character must select one realm in which he is infamous.
Looks Foul: This flaw replaces Poor Looks. It functions the same.
Primitive: The character is from a "wild mannish" realm--the Woses, Dunlendings, Lossoth, Haradrim, Easterlings, or Variags. He suffers a +1, +2, or +3 step penalty (depending on the skill points received) on all Knowledge skill checks dealing with information beyond the scope of his own society (including languages and literacy).
Greed: This is a new flaw available only to Man, Half-elf, Hobbit, and Dwarf characters. The character is particularly susceptible to the lure of valuable items. For 3 skill points, the character must make a Corruption check every time he himself acquires a new item of great worth. If he fails the check, he gains corruption and becomes excessively attached to his new possession. For 6 skill points, the character must make a corruption check whenever he is presented with the opportunity to acquire a new item of great worth, even if only by force or theft. If he fails the check, he gains corruption and will do anything in his power to acquire the item.
Lure of Power: This is a new flaw available only to Man, Half-elf, and Elf characters. The character is particularly susceptible to the corruption of power. For 2 skill points, the character suffers a +1 step penalty on all Corruption checks for using magical items or spells; for 4 skill points, a +2 step penalty; for 6 skill points, a +3 step penalty.
