Packing for a Day Hike   BSA Troop 62  Scotia, NY

The Boy Scout Handbook has lots of information in Chapter 8 (page 207) about appropriate gear. You should be able to pack everything in a light daypack. Line your daypack on the inside with a plastic bag to keep everything dry. Wear a pair of hiking boots which have been broken in. Heres a suggested packing list based on the Scout Outdoor Essentials
1.   Pocketknife useful for cutting rope, snacks
2.   First aid kit each patrol should have one. Include bandaids, tape, moleskin. If youre on medication LET THE SCOUT LEADER KNOW.
3.    Extra clothing its best to dress in layers. Instead of wearing one big coat, wear a light nylon or other water resistant jacket and a sweater. Always bring along an extra pair of socks, a hat (even in good weather), and extra shirt or sweater.
4.    Rain Gear Wear a water resistant/proof jacket and have some nylon pants available. If this is your first hike you dont need to buy them, but avoid wearing all cotton clothing, like jeans, because they absorb water and lose their ability to keep you warm when wet.
5.   Water Bottle a reusable plastic soda bottle works fine. Avoid the heavy metal canteens and anything that you wear around your neck.
6.     Flashlight You dont want to carry a monster foglight. A small dependable 2 battery AA flashlight works fine. Carry an extra pair of batteries and CHECK THE BATTERIES BEFORE LEAVING.
7.    Trailfood something to snack on raisins, small carrots, cereal, M&Ms, granola bars or make your own Gorp. Bring a lunch for this trip as well.
8.    Matches and firestarter
9.   Sun protection sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun as well as branches. We can apply the SunBlock at the trailhead.
10.   Map & Compass
11.   Toilet tissue not on the scout official list but a few sheets in a plastic bag can be a bottom saver.
12.   Clothes for the Ride Home It is always a good idea to have an extra shirt, pants, socks and comortable shoes for the ride home. Keep them in a bag and leave them in the car.
