Max was your typical pokemon trainer. He was fifteen years old, had been training for five years and, in his opinion, was doing a good job. He had trained a multitude of pokemon, but the one he most prized was Inferna, his Charizard. Inferna had been his starting pokemon, his only companion during the early days of his journey. He had received her as a Charmander from Professor Spruce, in Viridian City. Max formed a close bond with his pokemon, and over the course of their journey, Inferna had evolved twice, becoming a mighty Charizard. He had shared in wins and losses alike with Inferna and always cared for her.

One evening, Max was riding down the bike path between Celadon City and Sunny Town. Max decided that it was too late to continue on to Sunny Town in the dark, which was steadily approaching. He decided to find a suitable place away from the path where he could set up camp. He soon found an empty spot under the shelter of some trees, and laid out his groundsheet and sleeping bag. He let Inferna out of her pokeball as always (Max could not see Inferna being comfortable in her pokeball, even though he had bought her the best he could afford) and went to sleep.

Max was understandably distressed when he awoke to find Inferna was nowhere nearby. She was not in her pokeball, nor anywhere to be seen. Max did not panic however as he knew that she could fend for herself, and that it was silly to go looking for her, as if she came back to find him gone, what would she think?

Inferna returned later that day to a scolding from Max.
"Where on earth did you get to? I've been worried sick! Don't you *ever* do that again!"
Inferna hung her head, evidently ashamed at having left without his permission. Of course, she could not have told him where she had gone, even if she wanted to, but Max regretted scolding her. He cared for her dearly and was extremely glad to see she was back unharmed.

Their journey continued without incident, until Inferna became unusually sluggish. Max suspected she was ill, and he took her to the Fuchsia Pokemon Centre. There he was told to see a pokemon breeder, as Inferna was not ill, she was pregnant! Obviously shocked at the news, Max took Inferna to a pokemon breeder. According to the breeder, the best course of action was to release her, and let her instinct guide her. One known Charizard egg-laying ground was somewhere on Cinnabar Island, so Max boarded a ferry headed out to the Seafoam Islands, hoping to catch a ferry from there to Cinnabar. Winter was drawing near and the weather was getting colder, but since the cold weather does not affect Cinnabar as much, it forms an ideal migratory location. Max bought as much food for Inferna as his funds allowed, determined to give Inferna the best chance of giving birth successfully, as the breeder had told him. He fed her almost constantly during their trip to Seafoam, and her appetite had increased quite a bit, as she ate until she could not eat any more, more than she had ever eaten before.

Max knew that, even if he boarded the ferry from Seafoam to Cinnabar, he was too late. The only way for Inferna to be able to prepare for watching her eggs as the breeder told him she would, Max had to release her now, as she could fly faster than the ferry could sail.
Max said his farewells to Inferna as she gracefully glided above the waves. He knew that he was in for a long wait. It would be another six months at least before Inferna was able to return. He was determined to stay away from Cinnabar Island, as the thought of hundreds of female Charizards, all protecting their eggs sounds very dangerous to even be on the island.

It was already busy on the best shore on the island when Inferna arrived. All over, Charizards from all over the country had come here to lay. Even though he meant well, Max was just too wrapped up in his pokemon battles to notice the warning signs sooner.

Inferna was in luck. The area closest the water was vacant, and even though it was less than perfect, it would serve its purpose. She secured a spot as far from the water as possible. She dug to the warmer sand further down, hollowing out a cove, in which she laid four soft, leathery eggs and covered them with sand to harden and keep them warm.

Time passed...

Roughly two months after the eggs were laid, they hatched. In typical fashion, Inferna dug for her young. She uncovered three hungry Charmanders. Three? There were four eggs, and now there were four empty eggshells. It did not take long for the missing Charmander to return at the sight of light. He had dug himself further into the sand in an attempt at escaping their sandy prison. He was obviously the rebellious one of the group, and had markings on his coat, almost as if he was *trying* to be different. Scorch, as he became named, quickly joined the other three in crying for food.

The food was quickly provided in the form of small fruit, which Inferna had been gathering during her two-month wait. The young pokemon devoured the fruit, fuelling their growth and their flames.
There was much teaching to be done. Inferna taught her young ones how to hunt smaller creatures, which ones fight back, and which to avoid. The group was eager to learn, all except Scorch. It was always his view that he was better than everyone else, apart from his mother, and that he didn't need to be taught anything. In his attempts at hunting, he just rushed at the prey, scaring it away. The only thing he was good at was picking fruit, as he was more confident than the others. He would climb trees without any fear, and had a keen eye for the tastiest, juiciest fruit. That at least kept the others from disregarding him, and won the favour of his only sister, Cinders. He could not sustain himself on fruit alone however, but because of his excellent choice in fruit, the others would share the rewards of their hunts with him. Inferna taught her young about the humans and what they did. She taught them all that humans try to capture pokemon, and also that many humans were kind to pokemon, but also many were not, and to be cautious of them. This lesson, like all the others, Scorch ignored. *He* was better than the humans; it was *they* who should be cautious of *him*.

The learning came to an end when, four months after the young ones were hatched, Inferna bade farewell to her children in order to return to her trainer and friend, Max. This disappointed Scorch. She was the only one he looked up to, and she was returning to a *human*? This was puzzling, as he thought that he was the best, and here the only one he considered superior to him was friends with a *human*? He had to find out more about them. He wanted to follow his mother, but he had to find her first.

Scorch travelled the island, searching for his mother. His sister, Cinders, had decided to come along with him, and even though he hated to admit it, Scorch was grateful for her company and her ability to hunt. At least he would grow stronger from a diet of meat, instead of wasting away on a diet of fruit. During the search, Scorch's attitude came in handy in warning off any challengers. Often they would back down because he would act confident. Only the ones who were confident themselves stood up to him. Scorch stood up to these with the help of his sister, and this served to inflate his already large ego. He was the *best*!

It was apparent after an extensive search of the island that his mother was not there. She had to have flown over the sea. Scorch pondered this problem for a while. He could not fly, and neither could he swim. He disliked the water and if he tried to swim his tail flame would go out and he would die, or so his mother had said, and he knew she would not lie. He had to find some way across the water...

<The humans. They can't fly.> Scorch pondered aloud, <They don't look like they can swim that far either. They *must* have a way of crossing the sea.>
Scorch decided to watch the shore and see how humans came to and left the island. It did not take long for him to discover the port.
<Remember what mother told us! Be cautious around humans!> warned Cinders, as Scorch headed towards the one docked ferry.
<Humph, they can't harm me. Remember when we showed that Growlithe who was boss?> replied Scorch, continuing towards the ferry.
<That was different. Growlithes can't capture you!> Cinders was getting more anxious the closer Scorch got to the dock.
<You just watch me,> replied Scorch with his typical air of haughtiness, striding confidently towards the dock and the humans gathered there.
<This will all end in tears, I know it,> muttered Cinders under her breath. She secretly worried whether she would ever see her brother again.

The humans were moving towards the ferry, which was bound for the Seafoam Islands. No one paid any attention to the little orange lizard moving around their feet, or if they did they assumed some other passenger owned him. No wild pokemon would be daring enough to board a ferry. If they only knew...

Scorch was quick to find some secluded spot on board, for even though he was not afraid of the humans, they did unnerve him. He had watched the ferry leave the port several times and had worked out that it went somewhere where the humans got off again. He did not know where it went, but it *had* to be closer to his mother.

When the ferry docked at the Seafoam Islands, Scorch disembarked with the humans, still acting confident, though this time it *was* an act. He did not feel confident anymore, with all these humans around, but he had to *look* confident or they would realise he was a wild pokemon. He was considering going back to Cinnabar on the same ferry. At least there he knew the area and there was pokemon there that he knew.
No! He would not give Cinders the satisfaction of saying <I told you so> as she would undoubtedly do. But this place was scary. There was no place to go without humans there.

Scorch spotted another ferry. This one was on the other side of the island, and it looked to be heading further away from Cinnabar. He would have to chance it. He boarded the ferry with the same success as before. Scorch's confidence began to return to him. How stupid were these humans? He had pulled the same trick twice and they hadn't even noticed him! He did not seek a solitary place on the ferry this time, because he was so confident he hadn't been seen.
He was *not* going unnoticed however...

Scorch left the ferry when it docked. He hadn't a clue where he was, but he knew this place was bigger than anywhere he had ever been before! He slipped away from the crowd leaving the ferry, to find some place where humans wouldn't go. He quickly went into the trees, and did his typical tree-climbing trick in order to search for some food. The fruit here was even tastier than back home! Scorch ate his fill then dosed in the tree for a few hours.

When Scorch awoke, he was hungry again. He had already picked the best fruit from this tree, so he needed to find another. He scrambled down the tree, and looked around. He spotted more good fruit in another tree a few metres away. He confidently walked towards this other tree, only to be startled by a human voice behind him.
"Aha! I knew you didn't belong to anyone!"
Scorch turned around to face the direction the voice came from, to reply that he belonged to himself. Next to the tree he had been sleeping in was a young boy with short black hair. Scorch spotted the pokeballs on his belt. So he was going to try and capture him was he?
"You look different. No matter, you will be an excellent addition to my collection" The young boy selected a pokeball from his belt, and enlarged it. Scorch readied himself to dodge the ball.
"Go Strike!" cried the boy, throwing the ball. <A battle eh?> thought Scorch <this should be fun.>
The ball hit the ground and opened. From the white light emerged a huge shape on all fours. It seemed all armour plates and spikes! Scorch was determined to get the first hit in on this new foe, and readied himself for a Tackle attack.
The Rhyhorn took one look at its opponent, and then turned halfway towards its trainer with a look that seemed to say <Do you expect me to fight *this*?> It was surprised when he felt the bump of Scorch running into his right flank, and bouncing right off.
"Char!" <Ow!> cried Scorch, getting back up. This thing was hard, and that Tackle hurt me more than it!
<Haha! Silly little thing! You not hurt me! If you not want to be captured, you better start running.> the voice of the Rhyhorn matched its looks: big and stupid.
<If my Tackle attack did nothing, then maybe I should heat things up a bit!> thought Scorch, and he let loose a set of Embers from his open mouth.
Scorch considered himself lucky: one of the Embers struck the Rhyhorn in the eye, making him roar in pain. Or maybe it was unlucky: the Rhyhorn glared at the foolish Charmander with rage in his one good eye.
For once in his life, Scorch was intimidated by this pokemon. It was much bigger, heavier and nastier than anything he had faced before. It looked as if Strike was getting ready to charge, as he had started stamping his hind feet into the ground. Scorch backed away from it, readying himself to run, as he did not want to get hit by 250lb of charging Rhyhorn!
"Strike, Horn attack!" called the trainer, the Rhyhorn let out a bellow of rage and charged at the helpless lizard, with its head down and horn pointed forward.
Scorch ran. What else could he do? He ran faster than he had ever run before, with pure adrenaline pushing his muscles into overdrive. This trainer wasn't trying to capture him; he was trying to *kill* him! Scorch ran for the only place he knew to get away from the charging Rhyhorn: up a tree. He reached the tree with the succulent fruit he was making for before, although he was no longer hungry. He scrambled as fast as he could up the tree, as the Rhyhorn pulled up sharp, to avoid colliding with the sturdy-looking trunk. With his one good eye, Strike looked up into the tree at the exhausted Charmander, and then regarded the tree. It looked fairly solid, so he wouldn't be able to knock it down, and he couldn't reach the Charmander, as he couldn't climb.
Scorch thought he was safe, and so he began taunting the Rhyhorn and throwing the fruit at it.
<Haha! You can't get me! You're not so tough now are you?>
The Rhyhorn was getting really annoyed by now. Taunted by the little lizard, pelted by fruit, and with only one good eye. He had to teach this little pest a lesson. So he raised himself up on his hind legs, leaned against the tree with his front legs, using his weight to shake it. Scorch fought to keep his balance, as the tree shook violently. He suddenly had an idea. The Rhyhorn was already half-blind, if he pelted the other eye with fruit, he could escape. As he picked the nearest fruit to hand, and aimed at the Rhyhorn's good eye, Scorch lost his balance and fell onto the back of the beast shaking the tree.
The Rhyhorn was understandably annoyed at this and went back onto all fours, trying to shake him off. In desperation Scorch squeezed the fruit, letting the juice run down onto the Rhyhorn's face and into both its eyes. The Rhyhorn was now temporarily blind, and Scorch quickly made his escape into the undergrowth before the trainer could call another pokemon.

Battered and bruised, and with a few scratches from his hasty escape, Scorch was regretting ever leaving Cinnabar. At least the most trouble there was a scrap or two with a Growlithe. Now he was already making enemies and he had no meat in his diet. He had to learn to hunt properly, before he wasted away.

Scorch practiced hunting for a few weeks before he finally managed it, catching himself the first meat since he left home. He missed having Cinders around, missing her company and her hunting prowess, even if he did have to put up with her 'common sense' talk. No sense brooding though, he thought. He had to find shelter somewhere, as trees are not safe. Thankfully, he was able to find an abandoned burrow, previous occupier unknown. The entrance was not quite wide enough for him, indicating that the previous owner had been something small. Scorch widened the entrance with his front paws and made the burrow his temporary home. The burrow was small enough to be cosy, but large enough to serve its purpose.

Scorch remained in the grasslands outside Fuchsia for a few more weeks, brushing up on his survival skills, becoming more successful in hunting and therefore getting his personality back slowly (his confidence had been shaken ever since his encounter with the Rhyhorn).

When he was feeling more confident, Scorch continued his travels. He now views this as a chance to learn more than he ever could on Cinnabar. He knows his limitations now, and is careful around other pokemon (especially those bigger than him) as well as humans, as his mother had taught him. Always curious and investigative, but at least he now has *some* caution. He seeks his mother (as he looked up to her), as well as friendship; he has become lonely since he left Cinnabar.

What is your character like today? Personality, likes, dislikes, etc. How does he interact with others?

Scorch is your typical young pokemon; he loves to explore and will be friendly to others if they are friendly to him. His experiences, however few, have taught him the small amount of caution he has today, and he no longer takes rash actions. He has regained almost the same amount of confidence that he had on Cinnabar, although he tends to limit it better now. He enjoys his wanderings, and he still loves fruit. He does not like anyone who looks down on him (figuratively speaking of course because it is hard *not* to look down on him). He tends to do the looking down; there are not many he views as equal, and only his mother he looks up to. His opinions of other pokemon can improve however, and if they do become equal in his eyes, he will try to make friends with them. Here is one pokemon who *values* his friends.

Does your character have any special powers? If so, please detail them well.
Scorch has no special powers, possessing only the standard Charmander attacks. He has an eye for picking tasty fruit, but that's about it.

Please give us a sample description of what your character looks like.

Scorch is a Charmander. He is 2 feet tall, has bright eyes and a bright flame, indicative of a confident attitude. He also looks very healthy, from eating mostly fruit. The only thing that could set him apart from any other Charmander is his colouring. Scorch has flecks of red mixed in with the standard orange, along with a few flecks of black. The strange arrangement of the black, red and orange, combined with the orange glow from his tail flame makes it seem as if his entire colouring is constantly moving, looking as if there are small flames dancing across his back. If you look closely enough however you can see that this is not the case, but it is still striking.

Write a short profile, as you would like to have it appear in your +finger. (A profile is 4-5 sentences telling about your character's history, personality, and any general information.)

A Charmander. His colours are different from normal, with flecks of red and black mixed with the orange, making his back come alive in the light of his tail flame. He tends to be very confident, not much scares him. He is very trusting and friendly, but only with those he considers equal. He tends to look down on other pokemon until they have proved themselves to him, but once they have, he tends to become friends with them, and he values any friends he makes. He is cautious around bigger pokemon and humans alike. He tends not to stick in one area for long. If you ask nicely he may pick some nice fruit for you!

(For trainers only) Which pokemon would you pick for your character's starter pokemon? Why?
