BRYAN  OR  BRYANT ?

This  page

    is definitely           under construction

In the summer of 1999 I finally ran into enough road blocks to stop on the Sc(r)oggins family for a rest and try to start finding information on my grandmother on my fathers side. Armed with very little information, my wife and I headed to the library in search of Mary Belle Bryant ( my grandmother) .The first few times we found some families that might be and a lot of families that definitely were not. After a few trips I was looking in the cemetery books for Navarro Co. Texas when I found Josephine Bryan buried in a family plot with Cora Stone ( sister to my grandmother). A trip to Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana, Texas not only produced my great-grandmothers maiden name but also a near complete name of my great-grandfather.

John R. Bryan first showed up in the 1877 tax  rolls for Ellis Co. Texas and in the 1880 tax roll was listed as John R. Bryant. We found in the marriage records for Ellis Co., Texas that John R. Bryan married on September 15,1878 Josephine Brandon . They were listed in the 1880 census for Ellis Co. Texas. John R. Bryan was listed as being born in Arkansas and being 32 years old with both his parents being born in Arkansas. Josephine was listed as 22 years old being born in Missouri and her parents both being born in Tennessee. Next was the 1900 census for Navarro Co. Texas  ( page 52 line 18 ) we found Josapy Bryant  age 47 born Kentucky with 6 children and no husband. The children listed were Halbert born May 1881, Mirdie born May 1884, Cora born May 1889, John born March 1892, Arizona born Feb. 1895, and Josie born May 1898. Mary Belle Bryant ( born December 22, 1882 Waxahachie Ellis Co. Texas died June 27, 1974 Corsicana Texas )  was not listed , because she had married Stephen Alexander Scoggins( born May 25, 1878 in Texas maybe Hill Co. and died July 25, 1929 in Corsicana, Texas ) on March 18,1899. Now we on to the 1910 census for Navarro Co. Texas ( page 71 line 33 ) we find Josie Bryant age 55 born in Missouri, parents born in Tennessee with the children ( father born Kentucky and mother born Missouri ) John age 17, Arizona age 16, and Josie age 13.The 1920 census for Navarro Co. page 6 line 81 shows a Josephine Bryant age 64 born Missouri with both parents born Missouri. The children listed  were John age 25 and Josephine  age 21 father born Kentucky and mother born Missouri.

This part is even better I sent in for the Social Security application for (my Grandmother) Mary Belle Scoggins and when it came in her father was listed as John R. Bryant and mother listed as Josephine Brandon. Halbert's application listed his father as John R. Bryan and Mother as Josephine Brandon. .Cora Stone's information from Corley Funeral Home listed the father as John R. Bryant and mother as Josephine Brandon The headstone for Josephine in the Stone family plot has her as Josephine Bryan. Now all I need to do is find were  John R. Bryan(t) is buried and who his parents are. Another brick wall.
