Peshawar Vale Hunt
Extract from an article on the "P.V.H." in "The Pioneer", Jan. 14th, 1894: "It is fact, I believe, that in the year 978 A.D. Sabaktagim, Governor of Khorasan, garrisoned Peshawar with ten thousand horses ... It may be that mounted hunting parties were a common sight in these parts in the tenth century, and that we are only treading in the footsteps of Alexander, when we go a-hunting nowadays." The "Hunt Records" of 1870 opened with the sentence: "The far-famed Shires of the Eusufzaie Valley have long been acknowledged to be the only real hunting country in India."cf. Elliott - "Field Sports in India" (London, 1973), pp. 67-78.
It was in the North-West Frontier Province of India (now Pakistan) during the days of the Raj that the British whipped-in to the Peshawar Vale Hounds, hunting jackals - which, they found, "were not as cunning or as fast as the British fox".
The Peshawar Vale Hunt was formed by the Army in 1870 in Peshawar. Jackals were used instead of foxes. The pack was marched up to Kabul during the 2nd Afghan War and back to Peshawar. Taken about 1894. (Neg No.O/N/PA/PH 5317(2)) -- (with profound thanks to Mr. Walter Reeve - Australia for providing the photo)

The Hunt, 1867 - 1947     The story of how the 19th Regiment Foot founded what became the Peshawar Vale Hunt, which only came to an end in 1947 when the British finally departed from India.

1865 After being nearly two years at Jullundur the regiment marched for Peshawar on 1 November 1865 and arrived there on 8 December 1865.

A station pack of English foxhounds was established at Peshawar, - the origin of the present "Peshawar Vale Hounds".

After about 1930 there were a lot of Indian officers in the clubs. There was no color bar. The only place where you met that sort of discrimination was in the business centers. In Peshawar about 1930 there was some resistance when a regiment with Indian officers came--they'd never had anything like this before. The commanding officer of this regiment--it was a cavalry regiment--said that if his officers couldn't go to the club then his horses were not available to hire for people who wanted to hunt with the Peshawar Vale hounds. This settled it.
