Franz Wilhelm SCHUBART
Father: George Joseph Schubart
Mother: Maria Margaretha Ehrhard
Wilhelm Schubert (1825 – 1886) was born illegitimately in Epfenbach, Baden, Germany on 14 June 1825 at 2am, and baptised at the Protestant Church on 17 June 1825 at 6pm. Mother Maria Margaretta Ehrhard and George Joseph Schubert admitted to being his father on 29 August 1825.
Wilhelm married Catharina Martin only a few days before they migrated to Australia on board the ship “Triton” on 20 November 1852, he was aged 27. Eva Catharina Martin was born 1821, in Germany (parents Franz and Appolonie Martin). Parents on both sides are listed as dead. On the shipping register Wilhelm's occupation is shown as Vinedresser.
The reason they could not marry at home had to do with the restrictive marriage laws which were in force in Baden and other German States. The aim of the restrictive laws was to try to cap the rising numbers of poor families in the very bad economic conditions of the mid-19th century in the German states. in effect, the authoritiies made it very expensive to get a marriage licence, and if a couple had not been issued with a marriage licence, the priets and pastors were not permitted to marry them.
Wilhelm and Eva had 6 children George 1853-1934; Joseph 1856-1909, Raymond Terrace; Catherine (Kate) 1858; Mary 1860; William (Bohnock Oxley Island) 1862-1936; and Johanna (Manning River) 1865-1934.
Wilhelm died 21 September 1886 at Pampoolah and is buried in the Oxley Island Cemetery near Taree.
