Workshop Objectives (Phase IV)

The primary purpose of WorLD's Phase IV seminar, which was conductedat
Makerere College during the week of January 14 - 18, is to helpparticipants
develop skills and deepen their understanding of how to incorporate,evaluate
and diffuse innovative pedagogical practices, instructional technology,and
professional development opportunities. This is the culmination ofthe professional
development program, which requires participants to graduatethrough four
phases of training.

Biographical Narrative of Workshop Leader
=================================
R.W. "Buddy" Burniske's teaching career, which began in the early '80s, has taken him to secondary schools in Egypt, Ecuador, Malaysia and theUSA. While teaching in Kuala Lumpur he initiated several global, telecomputing projects, experimenting with the design of online learningactivities that synthesize the humanities, networked computer technologyand innovative pedagogy. He is the co-author of Breaking Down theDigital Walls: Learning to Teach in a Post-Modem World, which describesthe challenges of telecollaborative learning from the perspective of classroomteachers (State University of New York Press, 2001).
Dr. Burniske currently serves as the Director of Professional Development
for the World Links program. While drawing upon his experienceas
both a classroom practitioner and researcher, this work has takenhim
to Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America to teach educatorsin
Developing countries how to adapt information and communicationtechnology
to meet the needs of diverse students and curricula.

15-17 January, World Links’ Anglophone Africa Regional Coordinators
Meeting, Uganda
World Links’ National Coordinators and Ministry of Education country representatives from six African countries (Botswana, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe) came together at a three day workshop toshare experiences about their national programs. In addition to providingcomprehensive overviews of the World Links’ country programs other topicsdiscussed included national program expansion, technical issues and challenges,professional development training program and school-based telecenters.This is first time that the Anglophone African coordinators havehad a regional meeting.

18 January, VSAT Satellite School Project Launch, Uganda
Representatives from Ministry of Education, SchoolNet-Uganda participating schools, and other stakeholders interested in ICT in Education gatheredat Ndejje Secondary School for the official launch of the VSAT satelliteschool Internet Project. The project involves fifteen schools, most inrural communities, who have been provided with satellite dishes and attendanttechnology to access high speed Internet connectivity. Project partnersinclude the World Links Organization, Schools Online, the Bill and MelindaGates Foundation (who provided support for the satellite equipment) andSchoolNet-Uganda. Guests of honor include Honorable Dr. EdwardKhiddu-Makubuya, Minister of Education and Sports, Honorable Johnson Nkuuhe,and Dr. Peregrine Kibuuka, Chairman, Headmasters Association.
