McKinley High School Graduating Class of 1955

Remember Us?

We were the boys and girls of 7th grade, all scrubbed clean...with our saddle shoes, bobby sox and new Levis (TM). We wrote in our slam books, admired Mrs. Schump and ogled Mr. Whittington's new Buick. We viewed the world with wide-eyed innocence. It was 1950 and our universe seemed smaller and simpler.
Remember Us?

Then, we were the much more sophisticated guys and gals of 10th grade, withour newfound wisdom, curves, facial hair and wordly knowledge. We dug into Spanish and Geometry as we cheered our Golden Bears and sneered at the Franklin Thuderbolts or whatever they called themselves. Emily Matousek and Irene Brezinsky were at opposite ends of the "hip" scale but both taught us a great deal.
Remember Us?

In no time at all, we were the young men and women of McKinley..almost grown up and about to graduate. We were SENIORS, basking in the respect of the younger kids and looking forward to venturing out in the world. Ike was President, there was a chicken in every pot, 2 cars in many garages and our only real enemies were the Russians. When the weather turned bad, some of the old folks said it was their fault.
Remember Us?

Then came jobs, marriage, mortgages, kids and those high-pressure "getting and spending years". We scripmed and saved and coped as best we could with a new culture that featured rock & roll singers and bouffant hairdos. For most of us, "making do" and "making ends meet" were the priorities. No matter where we lived, we were honest, hard working, loyal and dependable...true to our Iowa heritage.
Remember Us?

Almost overnight, the kids were raised and gone. We saw semi-familiar faces in the mirror as we worried about preserving our health and feathering our nest for the "Golden Years". JFK's legacy was lost on LBJ and Nixon, giving us Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. Viet Nam had been and gone but many of us quietly bore the scars. Ronald Regan arrived in the nick of time. Taxes were cut; the market boomed and we joined the country in hoping there were better times ahead. We were the optimists.
Remember Us?

Here we are today, all grown up and wondering what's ahead. We have lived in 8 decades but if life were a game, we would be enjoying the 7th inning stretch. If it were a 24 hour day, we would be doing the dinner dishes and looking forward to an enjoyable evening ahead. There is still lots to do, lots to see, lots to share and lots to learn. We look ahead and hope our kids and grandchildren will enjoy a rich, full life like ours. We are the folks who worked hard, told the truth, paid our taxes and did our best to make this country just a little bit better. We are still the optimists.

Can You Imagine

No wads of gum drifting leisurely about in the water fountains?
No blue slips from the office?
Large roomy lockers?

Abo without car?
Harold Smith and not Dave Fossum?
A party or dance without an all-boys' conference in the middle of the floor?

Sociology Prayer

Now I lay me down to sleep.
The lecture's dry, the subject deep:
If he should quit before I wake,
Give me a poke for goodness sake

My fellow classmates. Does the above look familiar? If you are not having a Senior Moment, you will remember the above articles appeared in our year book.
