| After being fed some Chinese food from a restaurant near O'Hare in Chicago, my parents, Erica and I headed for the airport. After the tears and goodbyes, I was on my own. I had a little more than 3 hours to wait for my 10:15pm flight, and I ended up meeting a nice couple that were a bit older than my parents. The woman, who also happened to be named Julie, told me the story of why they were on their way to Denmark. As it turns out, many years earlier, their son went backpacking in New Zealand after graduating from College. He met a nice Danish girl there, and they have now been married 8 years and are living in Denmark. He too didn't know the language when he first arrived there, but is fluent now. Certainly a nice story to hear as I started my journey. |

| I arrived in Helsinki at about 9am Wisconsin time, or 5pm Finland time. Nobody at the airport ever checked my passport, but apparently a girl with two large yellow suitcases and a third carry-on looks suspicios, so they decided that I was the only one on the flight to be searched. Three people looked through my bags, one person for each. As they pulled everything out, I started to realize how much I had actually packed. I think that they were astonished as well. As they unpacked my bags, they were asking what I was doing in Finland. I answered that I was here to visit my boyfriend, and perhaps stay even longer if I found a job. When they were through with their search, they had no chance of getting everything back in the suitcases the way that I had. They ended up needing three decent sized plastic bags for what they could not fit back in my luggage. Then they jokingly said that I should apply for a job in customs, as they need someone who can pack as well as I can. After I got out of customs, I continued on to where Pauli was waiting for me, with roses in his arms. That was the first time I had seen him in 100 days exactly, and I'm sure that you can imagine that my smile certainly wasn't small. Pauli and I went to the apartment then, where he had made lasagna for us. It was a nice time to catch up with one another. |
