Bill Pullman
Bill Pullman is the king of the regular guy actors. He's appeared in tons of movies - a couple of movies per year since 1986 - and he's given consistently good performances, in movies that would not ordinarily be particularly memorable. He's looked about the same for twenty years and he has a special brand of endearing, slightly gruff, sometimes dorky, but good-humored charm.

In 1988, he appeared as Mason's publisher in The Accidental Tourist, who wanted to trade in the swinging single life for life with Mason's quirky, practically agoraphobic family. He was endearingly geeky in Favor, a horrible romantic comedy in which he was screwed over by the grating Harley Jane Kozak. Dumped again in Sleepless in Seattle, he was thrown over by Meg Ryan for no reason other than so she could eventually get together with milquetoasty Tom Hanks. (Boo hiss. Shameful.) He's a pretty good president in Independence Day - a little too good-looking to be president maybe, but he's got a great voice. He's also in a million movies I haven't seen, which I may have to correct. First up? Spaceballs, Newsies, The Last Seduction and Zero Effect. Ones I'll be avoiding? Sommersby, Mr. Wrong and Lost Highway.

My favorites of Bill Pullman's movies were all released in the 1990s, a pretty good decade for the romantic comedy and the 'regular guy' type of leading man. In Singles, he played a small, but memorable part of the doctor that Bridget Fonda consulted with about breast implants. In this role, he worked the endearingly dorky bit as Bridget ruffled up his hair and ended his appointment by boosting his self-esteem (not in a dirty way, or anything.) In While You Were Sleeping, he plays Jack Callaghan, a flannel-shirted, furniture-building, truck-driving, hiking boots-wearing guy who romances Sandra Bullock in a gruff, dry-humored awkward but charming sort of way. In Lake Placid, he and Bridget Fonda team up again to capture a giant crocodile. Much more fun than it sounds, this creature feature benefits from Pullman and Fonda's likable characters, a humorous script and a truly great creature. In this one, he plays a park ranger who never loses his cool (much) despite Brendan Gleeson's prickly sheriff and Fonda's high-strung scientist. He looks great in khaki, by the way.
