The Swift Creek Elementary School Chess Tournament Teams will again be competing in numerous regional tournaments. It is sure to be an exciting year, as the elementary team defends its title as state co-champion. SCES students from kindergarten to fifth grade are invited to participate in any tournament. Students from kindergarten through third grades are especially needed to join the primary team.

Primary (K-3) division: Even though they were two players short of a full team, the Swift Creek Primary Team was the proud winner of the 2nd Place Team Trophy! Individually, Mark Golden won the 6th Place Medal in the division and Taylor Jaszewski took home the 3rd Place Trophy!


Elementary (K-5) division: Fourth graders Emily Bradner, Ryan Donaldson, Cody Talmadge, Eric Sawchak and fifth graders Jasmine Bullock, Danny Morton, Erin Bradner and Christine Golden got the year off to great start by winning the 1st Place Team Trophy! Individual achievement awards were earned by: Cody Talmadge--7th Place Medal, Christine Golden--6th Place Medal, Danny Morton--5th Place Trophy, Erin Bradner--3rd Place Trophy and Eric Sawchak--1st Place Trophy!

Swift Creek Scholastic K-8 III
November 10, 2001

Primary (K-3) division:Congratulations to the nine players who played on the Swift Creek Primary Team ( grades K- 3) and earned the 2nd Place Team trophy! The primary team for this tournament was comprised of Taylor Jaszewski, Mark Golden, Cameron Kaufmann, Jenny Carlson, Heather Jaszewski, Connor Dodgen, Billy Malas, Rachel Bradner and Calvin Martin.


Elementary (K-5) division: The eighteen 4th and 5th graders who represented the Swift Creek Elementary Team against 5 other area schools won the 1st Place Team trophy! Individually, Christine Golden received the 4th Place overall individual player trophy and Brian Crossley took 2nd Place! Congratulations to the whole team: Brian Crossley, Christine Golden, Erin Bradner, Eric Sawchak, Garrett Dodgen, Connor Kaufmann, Matthew Larson, Ian Tomlin, Cameron Orth, Stephanie Humphrey, Jerry Carlson, Wil Collins, Danny Morton, Cody Talmadge, Jason Joyce, Mark Racette, Greyson Harrell, and Ryan Donaldson.

Lakeside K-5 II

Congratulations to the chess players from SCES who played in the Lakeside Scholastic Chess Tournament on Saturday, December 1st. With over 100 students from 8 schools were competing, both the Primary (K-3) and Elementary (K-5) teams from Swift Creek won 1st Place!

Primary (K-3) division: In the Primary Division, our team members were: Cameron Kaufmann, Connor Dodgen, Justin Humphrey, Mark Golden, Calvin Martin, Rachel Bradner and Michael Bush. In addition to the First Place Team Trophy, Medals were awarded to Justin Humphrey,Connor Dodgen and Mark Golden for individual achievement and Cameron Kaufmann earned the 4th Place trophy!!

Elementary (K-5) Division: In the Elementary Division, our team members were: Connor Kaufmann, Eric Sawchak, Carson Wang, Brian Crossley, Christine Golden, Garrett Dodgen, Sebastian Martin, Cody Talmadge, Emily Bradner, Jasmine Bullock, Erin Bradner, Madison Bush and Stephanie Humphrey. In addition to the First Place Team Trophy, Medals were won by Cody Talmadge, Sebastian Martin, Garrett Dodgen, Christine Golden, Brian Crossley and Carson Wang, with Eric Sawchak receiving the 4th Place individual trophy and Connor Kaufmann 3rd Place!!

Hopewell XVIII

Primary (K-3) division: There was a huge turnout for the 18th Annual Hopewell Chess Tournament. With over 200 players, the competition was stiff for both the Primary (K-3) team and the Elementary Team (K-5). The Swift Creek Primary Team of Taylor Jaszewski, Cameron Kaufmann, Connor J Dodgen, Mark Golden, Calvin Martin, Justin Humphrey, Rachel Bradner and Heather Jaszewski was the proud winner of the 2nd Place Team Trophy! Congratulations to the team on their hard won trophy and to Taylor who was awarded the 3rd Place Trophy for individual achievement.


Elementary (K-5) division: The team of fourth and fifth graders were the proud winners of the 1st Place Team Trophy! Governor's School Scholastic VII

Team Performance: The annual Governor's School Scholastic Chess Tournament was held on January 12, 2001 in Richmond. A record breaking 320 students competed in the event which was on Channel 8 News on Saturday night. Congratulations to the nineteen students from SCES who triumphed over 12 schools from across Virginia to bring home the 1st PLACE team trophy!

The Swift Creek competitors were:

1st graders: Cameron Kaufmann, Sebastian Martin,Mark Golden
2nd graders: Rachel Bradner,Justin Humphrey
4th graders: Cameron Orth, Emily Bradner,Cody Talmadge,Sebastian Martin, Eric Sawchak, Stephanie Humphrey, Connor Kaufmann,Brian Crossley
5th graders: Ian Tomlin, Brett James,Erin Bradner,Danny Morton,Carson Wang,Christine Golden

Individual Performance: Christine Golden and Connor Kaufmann received medals of achievement for 4 wins out of 5 games and Brian Crossley was undefeated and received the 1st Place trophy!

Primary (K-3) division: The Swift Creek Primary Team of Connor Dodgen, Justin Humphrey, William Malas, Cameron Kaufmann, Derek Godwin, Jennifer Carlson, Heather Jaszewski, Taylor Jaszewski, Calvin Martin and Rachel Bradner was the proud winner of the 2nd Place Team Trophy! Individually, Connor Dodgen took home the third place trophy and Justin Humphrey was awarded a medal in honor of his 6th place win. Congratulations!!!


Elementary (K-5) division: The team of fourth and fifth graders were the proud winners of the 1st Place Team Trophy! Playing for Swift Creek were: Connor Kaufmann, Erin K Bradner, Carson Wang, Garrett A Dodgen, Brian Crossley, Stephanie Humphrey, Danny H Morton, Ian H Tomlin, Jerry Carlson and Eric H Sawchak. State 4-Board Championship and MVP Scholastic

Fredericksburg

The Virginia Four Board State Chess Championship is a team competition held in Fredericksburg, Virginia with the top four players from each school competing. Congratulations to fifth grader Christine Golden and fourth graders Connor Kaufmann, Brian Crossley and Eric Sawchak who won first place and the title of Virginia State Four Board Team Champions with a PERFECT SCORE. Individually, each of our players was undefeated for the day and won the first place individual trophies for their respective boards.
State Scholastic Championship
March 9-10, 2001
Roanoke

Twenty-seven students from SCES competed in the Virginia State Chess Championships. Four hundred and fifty students from across Virginia participated in the event.

Primary (K-3) division:Cameron Kaufmann, Taylor Jaszewski, Justin Humphrey, Derek Godwin, Connor Dodgen, Jennifer Carlson, Rachel Bradner, Heather Jaszewski, Mark Golden, Calvin Martin, Results: The primary (K-3) team's ten players won the fourth place trophy, out of fifteen teams competing. Individually, Cameron Kaufmann received the 24th place medal and Taylor Jaszewski the 25th place medal...GREAT TEAMWORK!!

Elementary (K-5) division: Elementary Team: Carson Wang, Connor Kaufmann, Eric Sawchak, Christine Golden, Stephanie Humphrey, Garrett Dodgen, Erin Bradner, Danny Morton, Brian Crossley, Cody Talmadge, Ian Tomlin, Gerald Carlson, Cameron Orth, Sebastian Martin, Alex Godwin, Emily Bradner and Jasmine Bullock Results: The elementary team of seventeen fourth and fifth graders won the third place team trophy out of 21 teams competing. Individually, Carson Wang took home the 5th place trophy with 5 wins (out of 6) and Connor Kaufmann took home the 21st place trophy with 4 wins. Also with 4 wins: Eric Sawchak (28th), Christine Golden (32nd) and Stephanie Humphrey (34th). CONGRATULATIONS!!
Moore Millenium III

Primary (K-3) division: With a team of only two players, Swift Creek Primary won the 4th place team trophy. Congratulations to Justin Humphrey and Connor Dodgen!


Elementary (K-5) division: With a team of only three players, fifth grader Carson Wang and his fourth grade team mates, Stephanie Humphrey and Eric Sawchak, placed 5th in the K-5 division. Individual honors went to Carson who brought home the 2nd place trophy with 4 wins out of a possible 5.

Swift Creek Elementary was represented at this event by Erin Bradner (grade 5), Stephanie Humphrey and Emily Bradner (grade 4) and Rachel Bradner (grade 2). Congratulations to Stephanie who placed 2nd in her division with 3 wins out of a maximum possible of 4!!

Elementary (K-5) division: The team of fourth and fifth graders were the proud winners of the 2nd Place Team Trophy! Playing for Swift Creek were: Erin K Bradner, Carson Wang, Christine Golden, Eric H Sawchak and Cody Talmadge. Individually, Carson was undefeated and took home the first place trophy for individual achievement.

Hopewell Spring Scholastic

Primary (K-3) division: There was a huge turnout for the 18th Annual Hopewell Chess Tournament. The competition was stiff for both the Primary (K-3) team and the Elementary Team (K-5). The Swift Creek Primary Team of Mark Golden, William Malas, Derek Godwin and Rachel Bradner closed the season in a three way tie for first place. The top three primary teams each had 14 points and Swift Creek won the third place trophy based on tie breaks. Congratulations to the team on their hard won trophy and to Mark who received a medal for his achievement of 6th place in his division.


Elementary (K-5) division: The team of fourth and fifth graders were the proud to end the season as the winners of the 1st Place Team Trophy! Playing for Swift Creek were: Carson Wang, Erin Bradner, Eric Sawchak, Danny Morton, Ian Tomlin, Christine Golden and Emily Bradner. Individually, Carson Wang was undefeated and took home the first place individual trophy in the K-5 division.
