The SCES elementary team is the Virginia State Champion for 2001!

The Swift Creek Elementary School Chess Tournament Teams will again be competing in numerous regional tournaments. It is sure to be an exciting year, as the elementary team defends its title as state co-champion. SCES students from kindergarten to fifth grade are invited to participate in any tournament. Students from kindergarten through third grades are especially needed to join the primary team.

Results: Erin and Emily won second place overall. Erin captured the individual first place and Emily placed fifth in the elementary division.

Results: The primary team won first place in their division. Taylor also won the sixth place individual medal.

Results: The elementary team also won first place. Individually, Palmer won first place, Erik was third and Christine was fourth.

Results: The primary team won first place in their division. Mark won the fifth place individual trophy.

Results: The elementary team also won first place. Erik captured the first place individual trophy, with Palmer winning third place and Christine fourth. Kevin took home the fifth place medal and Sarah received the sixth place medal.

Swift Creek Scholastic Chess Tournament II
November 11, 2000
Swift Creek Elementary and Middle Schools hosted this tournament with ten regional schools attending, including: Evergreen Elementary, Clover Hill Elementary, Lakeside Elementary, Dumbarton Elementary, Luray Elementary, Hope Check Mates, Collegiate School, St. Michael�s and Richmond Montessori. One hundred students participated in the highly competitive chess matches.
Primary Team: Timothy Perry, Connor Dodgen, Anjali Upadhyaya, Taylor Jaszewski, Rachel Bradner, Kevin Christiansen Calvin Martin and Mark Golden
Results: The team took first place in the primary division.
Elementary Team: Palmer Mebane, Derek Chi, Sarah Garrison, Tim Dannenhoffer, Erik Golden, Michelle Fisher, Nathan Kendler, Kevin Donaldson, Danny Morton, Ian Tomlin, Erin Bradner, Christine Golden, Garrett Dodgen, Zane Underwood, Becca Foy, Eric Sawchak, Emily Bradner, Sebastian Martin, and Ryan Donaldson
Results: The SCES elementary team edged out the other elementary teams to win first place. Individually, Garrett Dodgen received the fifth place trophy, Erik Golden fourth place, Tim Dannenhoffer third place and Nathan Kendler second place.

Lakeside Scholastic Chess Tournament
December 2, 2000

Primary Team: Taylor Jaszewski, Timothy Perry, Connor Dodgen, Rachel Bradner, Mark Golden and Calvin Martin
Results: After a fierce competition, the Swift Creek players edged ahead of Deer Park School of Virginia Beach for the first place team trophy. For individual achievement Connor Dodgen and Taylor Jaszewski earned medals, Mark Golden the fifth place trophy and Timothy Perry the fourth place trophy.

Hopewell Scholastic Chess Tournament

Results: The team brought home the first place trophy. For top individual scores, Brian Crossley was awarded the fifth place trophy, Sebastian Martin fourth place, Eric Sawchak third place, and Connor Kauffman second place.

Governor's School Scholastic Chess Tournament

Results: Swift Creek was awarded the second place team trophy with 14.0 points, narrowly missing first place by one-half point to Deer Park School of Chesapeake, Virginia. Individually, third grader Connor Kauffman earned the third place trophy with four out of five wins.

Results: Swift Creek Elementary edged out Henrico County�s Lakeside Elementary by one-half point to claim the second place trophy. Nathan Kendler took home the third place trophy with four and a half wins. Erik Golden was awarded the fourth place trophy with four wins. Palmer Mebane earned the sixth place medal with four wins.

Dinwiddie Scholastic Chess Tournament
February 3, 2001

Over 156 children from seven schools around Virginia and North Carolina participated in the Dinwiddie Scholastic Chess Tournament. A record thirty students from SCES entered the competition.
Primary Team: Billy Malas, Calvin Martin, Mark Golden, Rachel Bradner, Timothy Perry, Taylor Jaszewski, Connor Dodgen and 3rd graders Cameron Orth, Emily Bradner, Andrew Herzog, Eric Sawchak, Sebastian Martin, Cody Talmadge, Brian Crossley and Connor Kaufmann
Results: The primary team brought home the first place team trophy with a strong lead of more than three points. Individually, Cody Talmadge won the fifth place trophy, Brian Crossley fourth place and Connor Kaufmann first place. All three are third graders.
Elementary Team: Kevin Donaldson, Becky Malas, Chris Crossley, Sarah Garrison, Tim Dannenhoffer, Nathan Kendler, Palmer Mebane, Erik Golden, Jasmine Bullock, Zane Underwood, Ian Tomlin, Erin Bradner, Garrett Dodgen, Christine Golden and Wil Collins
Results: The fifteen fourth and fifth grade students who played in the elementary division also won the first place team trophy by a lead of four points. Fifth grader Tim Dannenhoffer won the seventh place individual medal, fourth grader Christine Golden earned the sixth place medal, and Nathan Kendler won the fifth place trophy. Palmer Mebane brought home the third place trophy and Erik Golden placed first.

Virginia Four Board Championship

The Virginia Four Board Chess Championship is a team competition held in Fredericksburg, Virginia with the top four players from each school competing. Congratulations to fifth graders Erik Golden, Palmer Mebane, Nathan Kendler and Derek Chi who won first place and the title of Virginia State Four Board Team Champions. Individually, Erik earned fourth place for Board One players, Palmer first place for Board Two players, Nathan Kendler first place for Board Three players and Derek Chi first place for Board Four players.
Three students represented SCES at the MVP Eagles Chess Tournament in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Fourth grader Christine Golden won the fifth place individual trophy in the elementary division, third grader Sebastian Martin earned the twelfth place trophy and kindergartner Calvin Martin the eighteenth place medal in the primary division.

Twenty-seven students from SCES competed in the Virginia State Chess Championships. Over 450 students from across Virginia participated in the event.

Results: The primary (K-3) team's thirteen players won the fourth place trophy, out of seventeen teams competing. Individually, Sebastian Martin received the 28th place medal, Brian Crossley the 22nd place medal, and Connor Kaufman the 16th place trophy, all with 4 wins out of six games.

Elementary Team - State Champions Results: The elementary team of fourteen fourth- and fifth-graders won first place and is the Virginia State Chess Champion! Twenty-four elementary teams competed. Individually, Nathan Kendler won the 20th place medal, and Tim Dannenhoffer took home the 14th place trophy, both with four wins each. Erik Golden received the seventh place trophy with five wins, and Palmer Mebane won the first place trophy for Virginia with 6 wins!
