| Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17th, 1706. He was the 15th child, of seventeen children in the Franklin family. Ben was a very smart boy who learned to read and write at a very young age, and then soon went to grammar school for a few years. He was learning at a rate of a older man, and it was unheard of at this time. He had worked for his father Josiah, candle-making, but stongly disliked it. So he went to work for his brother James, who was in the printing buisness. Franklin worked for his brother for the next five years, and his mind only grew with more intelligence. He had written many letters and his brother published them in his newspaper, New England Courant, where his letters were widely read. Later in his life he moved to Philadelphia, again working in the printing buisness, with co-worker William Keith. But soon by 1730 Ben eventually went to work for himself. And later in the year he married Deborah Read, who he had met before on his trip. They had two children while married, one in which died. As business progressed for Franklin he had purchased The Pennsylvania Gazette, which was known as the best colonial newspaper. Poor Richard's Almanac, written by Richard Saunders was published for 5 years. Franklin also contributed many other inventions that wes still use now in our lives. Such as a library, University of Philadelphia, and the stove which was invented in 1744. All of these great ideas of his, are only just a few of his mastermind inventions. By the late 1740's Franklin began to experiment with Electricity. While he began to experiment he invented the lightening rod. Since his scientific experiments took much thought, he decided that he needed to sell his printing buisness and focus on his new studies, which he felt were more important and productive. |
