In 1999, the Chapmans adopted a 7 month old baby girl from China and named her Shaohannah Hope Chapman.
Steven: "Shao means laughter. In Chinese it would be spelled Xiao [pronounced like "chow."] But we thought, boy if we try that in her name, she'll hate us forever. Hannah is a name we've always loved. It's, of course, not Chinese, it's Greek, for "gift of God's grace." So laughter and God's grace kind of put together for us and she's all of the above."
Little Shaohannah and the miracle of adoption "Has been the most profound experience of the life changing power of love that my family and I have ever know," Steven says.
In the year 2001, Steven released his album Declaration which had a song entitled "When Love Takes You In". The truly powerful and emotional song was inspired by the Chapman's adoption of Shaohannah in 1999. "Its probably one of the two songs that I can honestly say I wept as I wrote it," says Steven.
The video for "When Love Takes You In" is just as amazing and powerful as the song is. It's just something you have to see.
The Chapmans welcomed home another baby girl from China just recently (May 2003). They named her, Stevey Joy Chapman.
