Scalpworms are enigmatically weird little creatures, aren't they? Normally 2-4mm in size, these twisted little creations are found in infested scalps, where the high moisture and abundance of dead skin and oil create an environmental heaven for parasites.
Our society does not like to face problems like this seriously. We often hear them discussed through euphemism or allusion, such as "He's got that kind of a situation" or "She can't go out without a hat."
Perhaps this explains why often things as bizarre as scalpworms are not addressed by society as a whole. There's no real way to bring it up in conversation, just as trying to have a serious conversation about death at a time when its imminent appearance is not likely. Scalpworms like death represent an uncontrolled side of life we would rather deny.
Yet these things live among us like parasites in the infected scalp of a victim. When you look at a scalpworm, it exactly its out of this world appearance that helps you forget that it might be closer than you think to your everyday life.
