This year marks the tenth year of the Scaldis Korfball Club (AU). To celebrate, the Club will beholding a Dinner acknowledging their ten years of existence at the Football Park Convention Center, West Lakes, South Australia, on Saturday July 21st 2001.
Scaldis Korfball Club was formed in 1991 by Peter Wilson, Susi Datseres, Amanda Sowter, Janet Stacey (nee Pascoe), and Adam Clarke.
In 1991, Ivo Gossens from Scaldis Korfball Club (Belgium) stayed with Susi when the Belgian national team toured Australia. At that time both Peter and Susi had plans to form a new korfball club, and Ivo suggested we become an Australian chapter of the Scaldis Korfball Club.
So, they did. They adopted the name and the colours, and got to work on building a club.
They knew, from the outset, they would, struggle for a few years. They found, at the time that some clubs were building success by recruiting top line players from other clubs. They resisted following that option, as right from the outset, they decided that Scaldis Korfball Club would be about introducing the sport to new people, and building something up from ‘grassroots’ level.
About three weeks before the start of the first State League Korfball season for Scaldis, 1992, they had about ten players, but they still persisted with nominating two teams. That ‘nominateteams first, get players second’ approach has been adopted through the years at Scaldis. They want to give everyone a game, so when it looks like someone might miss out on a game due to too many numbers, well, they just nominate a new team!! It seems to have worked, although, as Pete says, it’s been a bit of a logistical nightmare from time to time!!
During the early years, while they were building the club from ground up, they lost a lot of games by a lot of goals. They knew they’d get better, it would just take time. Around that time they decided to make having fun as much of a priority as winning games.
Scaldis’ on court performance has improved in recent years, making the South Australian State League Finals in 1997 and 1999, and playing in the National Club Championships final in 1999 (which they lost by a goal to a composite Victorian side).
Scaldis Korfball Club are the ‘life’ of the South Australian Korfball community. Their Ten Year Dinner will be a big night, with the announcement of their “Team of the Decade”, selected by their A Grade coaches during the period.
