JCSC Target Groups

The JCSC Fellow @ Stony Brook University is in charge of creating a welcoming Jewish life for “engagement” students on campus.  What does engagement mean again?  Click here for a refresher course.  These students can be classified in the following ways…

FYSHGAPStudents in the Residence Halls - UJC Campus Campaign - Others

FYSH – First Year Students of Hillel

This group for freshmen and transfer students focuses on giving students a good first impression of Jewish life on campus and helping students adjust to a whole new environment and stage in their lives.  Many FYSH programs are social in nature.  Here are examples of FYSH programs & initiatives I did this past year:

·        Schmooze with the Jews - New Student Welcome Dinner

·        Photo Scavenger Hunt

·        Pizza in the Hut

·        FAB: FYSH Advisory Board

·        FYSH Food (a series of free FYSH lunches)

·        Night Out in Port Jeff

·        Chocolate Seder planning meetings

·        Leadership Appreciation Night

·        FYSH Dinner & A Movie

GAP – Graduates And Professionals

This group basically encompasses graduate students on campus and anyone else in the area above the traditional “college age.”  Programs take place on the main campus, or East Campus where the hospital and the Health Sciences Center (HSC) are located.  These individuals are usually drawn to programs that might be a little more intellectual in nature, or simply allow them to meet other 20-somethings in the area.

·        Sukkot Brunch

·        GAP Rap Session

·        Happy Hours

·        HSC Hanukkah Festival

·        Latke vs. Hamantaschen Symposium

·        Wine & Cheese Reception

Students in the Residence Halls

Most Stony Brook students who do not commute from their parents’ homes live in the on-campus Residence Halls (each one is called a “college”).  These students are often involved in many other on-campus activities and can fall into many different categories.  Working with the dorm’s Resident Advisor (RA) is a good way to bring a little bit of Jewish Life to these students.  Some programs which worked for me this past year were:

·        Holiday packages delivered for Hanukkah & Purim

·        Challah-making in Hendrix College

·        Tabling near the Cafeteria

·        LatkePalooza in the Residence Halls

United Jewish Communities (UJC) Campus Campaign

The UJC Campus Campaign is the campus-branch of the United Jewish Communities – a Jewish fundraising group and the central organization of all Jewish Federations.  In the past, Campus Campaign has sponsored social awareness and educational programs, as well as fundraising efforts for the UJC.

·        meetings

·        Hilleloween

·        UJC Silent Auction

·        UJA-Federation of NY Super Sunday

Others

The above groups cover a lot of Jewish engagement students on campus.  However, you will inevitably meet students during the year who are not involved with Jewish Life on campus but do not fall into any of these groups either.  They may belong to a certain ethnic group (Russian, Persian, Israeli, etc.), be a commuter student, an athlete, a returning student, or anything else!  Even if they do not fit into a target group, its great to do a little one-on-one engaging here to help them find their niche in the Jewish campus community as well.

More information about any of the above-mentioned programs can be found here.
