Long Island                           New York City                      And beyond…

Long Island

Lawn Guyland, as it is more affectionately known as, is a very suburban/rural area divided into Nassau and Suffolk counties.  It has been made famous by the many New Yorkers who have moved out here, as well as the more well known areas such as The Hamptons and Great Neck.  Stony Brook is in the Three Villages in town of Brookhaven on the North Shore of Suffolk (pronounced Suff-ick).  Other towns immediately surrounding the university are Setauket, Port Jefferson, Selden, Coram and Lake Grove.  Some good malls on the Island are Smith Haven Mall (the closest), Roosevelt Field, Walt Whitman Mall, and the Tanger Outlets in Riverhead, NY.

Here are some things to do and places to see around here:

New York City

Proximity to New York City, and specifically Manhattan, is one of the best things about living on Long Island.  To get there you can take the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) from right here on campus to Manhattan’s Penn Station.  It costs $14.50 and takes two hours so driving to Queens and taking the subway into the city is sometimes easier.

There are a billion and one things to do there, here is only a fraction:

And Beyond…

If you are not from the area, use this opportunity to explore the rest of New York and the East Coast.  Visit Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, Newport RI, etc.  If you aren’t afraid to hit the road, Rabbi Joe is great at giving you directions anywhere.  Otherwise, use Amtrak or Greyhound and get out there!  If you do not know anyone in the area you want to visit, make friends with the nearest JCSC and I am sure they would be more than willing to put you up for a night or two.
