Emails
Add your
event to the weekly Hillel email calendar, send out emails to specific interest
groups, and send personalized emails to people you know. People like it when they see their name on
an email once in a while.
-
Flyers
Make your flyer at least a couple weeks in
advance, or as soon as you know the definite details for the event. We generally use PrintMaster here for
flyer-making so have Josh give you a lesson on how to use it, and see my past
flyers here
for ideas. Once you have them printed
up (make lots of copies), it can make your life a lot easier if you have
students who are working on your program with you help put them up. Ask them nicely and give them 25 or so to
put up near their dorms and lecture halls.
-
Phonemail
Phonemail is
the voice mail system used here on campus.
Since Hillel has a 632-XXXX number and all the campus residences have
216-XXXX numbers, you will have to find a student and ask if you can use their
distribution lists. Get their box
number and password.
Directions:
dial 60000 from a campus phone, enter box number (6XXXX) then pound (#), enter
password then pound. You can create
lists of numbers for each target group, or just for FYSH. Follow the directions on the phone to record
a message and send it out to your lists.
Joy Werner is an expert on phonemail messages.

Phone calls
This takes lots of time but can be very
effective. Get your schpiel down
straight and then start going through the yellow registration cards to tell
everyone about your event. Students can
also help with this.
-
Word of Mouth
Get the word out! Talk up your event among students you know, and tell them to tell all their friends how cool it will be.

What is “tabling”??
Tabling is basically sitting at a table (or standing by it) with information about Jewish life on campus, a big SMILE, and a shtick or two. When it comes to tabling, there is one very important word – FREE!!!!

Location,
Location, Location…
Some places/times work, and others
don’t. You can learn a lot from
experience - I found that the following places were pretty good:
·
the Union Lobby at
Campus Lifetime (Wednesdays 12:40-2pm)
·
any lecture hall lobby
(Javits, SBS, Humanities) from 11am ish till 3pm ish
·
in front of a dorm
cafeteria at dinner time (5-8pm)
·
Health Sciences Center,
level 2 near the Bookends Cafe
Speak with Kohava about reserving a table when and where you want it a couple weeks in advance.
-
Tabling as publicity
A good way to get the word out about an event is to table a week or two before it with flyers and free stuff. For example, before the annual FYSH Chocolate Seder past JCSC’s have tabled with FYSHing for Chocolate. Fill large boxes with Hershey’s kisses, Reese’s pb cups, etc and offer them to people walking by.

Tabling Ideas
Fimo Mezuzah making (see resources below), cookie decorating, stress balls (sand, funnels & personalized Hillel balloons), Hummus tasting, free cotton candy or popcorn, Regression Study Break (play-doh, apple juice, Nilla wafers), UJC fundraisers: Shabbat-O-Grams, Shavua-Tov-O-Grams, raffle off donated items
* Here are some
Mezuzah-making resources: make a mezuzah,
don’t
forget your mezuzah, mezuzah “scroll,”
how to hang your
mezuzah.

Tabling for Holidays
To bring a little holiday fun to people on their way to
class, pass out Holiday-related items or food, along with a little background
info on the holiday. Visit the Holiday page for
more info.

What to Bring
Pack up a rolling cart with the following when you go on a tabling outing:
upcoming event info, Hillel registration cards, pens, general Hillel info/brochures, Hillel giveaways, your business cards, reservation sheet for your location, masking tape, scissors, free food or any other tabling shtick, food & water for yourself, sunscreen if outside on a sunny day, cell phone
