4. The New York Jewish Community
The full title of Stony Brook University is the State University of New York at Stony Brook. SBU is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. You can use the campus webpage (http://www.stonybrook.edu/) to become familiar with the different departments and organizations within the university. The campus is quite large so take some time to become familiar with it using this map and by walking around before classes begin.
The residential area of campus is broken up into 6 quads – Roth, Tabler, Roosevelt, Kelly, Mendelsohn and H-Quad. Within each Quad there are 3, 4 or 5 colleges/buildings. Each floor of the building has an RA (Residential Advisor), each building has and RHD (Res Hall Director) and each Quad has a QD (you guessed it…Quad Director). It would be helpful to get to know these people if possible at the beginning of the year so that programming in Res Halls can take place.
The campus student government (Student Polity Association) is the umbrella group for all other campus organizations, and divides up money among them. It is often helpful to co-sponsor events with other campus groups to increase attendance and to help with the budget. NYPIRG is a great group to co-sponsor environment-related programs with. Meagen Reeve (the Project Coordinator) can be contacted at 2-6457 or [email protected]. Another contact is Peter Mastroianni in the CHOICE Center – 2-9338, [email protected]. For programs in the Health Sciences Center, Kayla Mendelsohn (4-2257) is always more than willing to work with you.
HONY (Hillels of New York) is the regional office for all New York Area Hillels. Some of the staff there is from Hillel’s International Center, and some will be working with Stony Brook Hillel staff from time to time. Once in a while there are area-wide events as well. Other major campuses served by HONY are NYU, Columbia/Barnard, Queens College, Brooklyn College and Hofstra.
The UJA-Federation of New York is based in Manhattan and overlooks many aspects of Jewish life in New York. There are many subsidiary agencies and we are one of them. There is also an annual Super Sunday to raise money for the UJA-Federation (which then mostly goes to Tzedakah) and we usually send a group to help make phone calls on that day.
FEGS is a Jewish health and human services agency in the New York. It can provide many helpful resources for you or your students.
SAJES (The Suffolk Association for Jewish Educational Services) is a local Jewish organization where Rabbi Topek’s wife, Sue, works.
The Suffolk Y-JCC of Commack is the closest Jewish Community Center to Stony Brook. It is about a 20-30 minutes drive and has a school, gym and offers many different classes
