All About Me

Who Was I

Before attending Mount Royal College this semester I lived in Edmonton, and attended Concordia University College of Alberta. I only lived in Edmonton for a year before deciding to move back to Calgary. It's not that I didn't like Edmonton, but Calgary had been my home for 17 years, so I had grown accustomed to the people, places and things associated with it.

Why did I move then you ask? Blame it on the government, both federal and provincial- they're both to blame (isn't it always that way?)

How was the government involved? (They're involved in more ways than you think!) Sorry, that was a little conspiracist insanity, it won't happen again. (Who got to you Andy? Who got to you!?!) Anyway, my parents moved to Edmonton when I was 19 when my dad changed jobs. I decided 19 was a little too old to be following my parents to another city, so I moved in with my sister (Kelly- three years my senior) in downtown Calgary. I lived there while working full-time for a year. When I went back to school (Mount Royal) I first went part-time, planning to attend full-time in the winter with the help of a student-loan to pay tuition and rent (which was pretty low, considering what an apartment in downtown Calgary usually goes for).

Here's where the government (and, oddly, irony) creeps in. While I think many will agree that 19 is old enough to not be forced to relocate with your parents, apparently the government disagrees (or at least the bureaucracy in charge of student loans do). Because I had not lived away from home long enough, and because, apparently, my parents had a lot of money (which was a pleasant surprise for them) I did not qualify for any assistance. None. Nothing. I know rich kids that get loans, me nothing.

So I tried to work and go to school. Didn't work. I ended up dropping a lot of classes. So I moved to Edmonton, went to a school with higher tuition, and got a loan easily. I've stopped trying to make sense of this process.

Why'd I move back? It wasn't like I didn't like Edmonton. I was born there (we moved to Calgary when I was 2 or 3 years old, strangely I don't remember moving), I've been a fan of the Edmonton Oilers my whole life (well, not quite. They weren't around until I was 2, but I didn't really follow hockey those first couple years), and I had a pretty good job. I moved because my dad's job moved my parents to Saskatoon (do you get the feeling they were really trying to get away from me?) and I wasn't about to follow them to Saskatchewan (no offence, Saskatchewanites). So I moved back to where my friends were (Calgary) and since I was now 21, getting a loan was easy.

Why am I telling you all this? Because it's required for my class (see below). I don't really expect anybody to still be reading anyway, who reads this much text in a row on the net these days?

Who I Am Now

Now I am, once again, a student at Mount Royal. A student who is designing a web page for my Computer Sciences 1230 course. I realize that the last thing this world needs is another personal web page, but this is an assignment, it's not my fault, honest. (Go to Mt. Royal College to visit my prestigious institution's website).

I love sports, I go to school, I hang out with friends, I watch TV, I watch movies and read comics. That's me in a nutshell (is it just me, or does that last part sound like a personal ad- except for the part about comics, most guys would leave that out of a personal ad).

sketch of me

For those of you wondering what I look like, here's a police sketch of me:

Besides looking contemplative, I have other great qualities (or at least I'm supposed to for the purpose of this assignment. They are as follows:

  1. I produce Carbon Dioxide, which plants need to live. Thus I contribute to the process of Photosynthesis, which allows all living beings to breath (that's pretty good of me, huh?).
  2. I have an extensive knowledge of sports, more so than anyone I know (however, that could mean that I have more time to learn trivial things than anyone I know).
  3. I have mastered the usage of parenthetical comments (it's true).
  4. I can use "parenthetical comment" in a sentence.
  5. I invented the internet.
*(note: I made one of these up, can you guess which one?)

I'm a pretty significant guy, huh? I guess I am significant enough to have my own web page!
