Chapter 5
"Why can't things be simple like in Hamburg? Or even how it used to be?" Sydney asked breaking the silence.
"Because times change. People change. Things change. We've change...all of us. We all used to be carefree. Whever happened, happened. Now we have obligations, kids, wives, or husbands for some, and troubles,"John said.
"We've betrayed a lot of people's trust this week," Sydney said
"Just about everyone we care about," John added.
"Do you think things will ever go back to normal?" Sydney asked.
"Define normal" John said.
"We're all happy all the time," she said.
"No I don't," he said
Meanwhile Claire and Paul had both not been feeling like watching the telly.
"I'm sorry I ever doubted you," Paul said upset.
"It's alright. Just don't let it happen again," Claire joked.
"No, it's not alright. Relatonships are based on trust, and I wans't trusting you. You're the person I should trust the most," Paul said.
"No, ALL relationships are based on trust. You just didn't believe Sydney and John could be lying to all of us and doing that to George and Cyn," Claire said.
"When did George and Sydney drift apart? I didn't notice it happening." he wondered.
"I think it started out as more of an...John and Sydney were both lonley at the same time. What with George at sitar lessons all day, and Cyn at home. So they had lots of time alone, and just...I think it started out as lust, but I don't know enough.They must be in love now though, because Sydney is a good person. If it was anything less, she'd have quit after the first time," Claire said.
"If you ever fell out of love with me...I'd die," Paul said.
"If you ever fell out of love with me...yeah I guess I'd die too," Claire said.
Paul walked over and gave Claire a kiss.
"I am so sorry I didn't believe you."Paul said.
"Prove it,"Claire said as she gave him a kiss.
Paul and Claire walked into their bedroom and left James playing with Julian and Zak. Sydney and John walked into the garden.
"John, should we continue?" Sydney asked.
"With the sex or with a relationship?" John asked.
"Either" she said.
"I was thinking about that too. I know you really love me, because you wouldn't of let this continue, because you are a good person. And I know I love you, I've never felt this way for anyone. I don't want anything to break us up, but how can we continue this without hurting everyone we love?" John asked.
"I don't know. I'm just confused as you are. I mean us, we just feel so right. I don't ever want to have to leave you" she said sadly.
They both walked back into the house. Sydney and George went to their room and Cyn and John went to their room.
"Sydney, what have you and John been talking about?" George asked as Sydney turned the light off.
"About depression. When I was back in my own time, I had to battle depression too, so I know just how John is feeling. It's better to talk to someone who knows what you're going through." Sydney said.
George quickly fell asleep. Sydney couldn't sleep so she quietly got up and walked down to the back porch.
"John!" she gasped as she saw him seated on the porch swing.
"Can't sleep either?" he asked as she sat down next to him.
"Nope, too much on my mind" she said.
"Mine too" John said with a sigh.
"There's no simple answer for us, is there?" Sydney asked.
"Nope, I've already tried to think of one...no such luck" he said shaking his head.
Just then they heard some noise inside the house. Claire and Paul walked out onto the porch, but they didn't see John and Sydney, because they were hidden in the shadows.
"Should we tell them we know?" Claire asked.
"I don't know" Paul said.
"Paulie..." John said.
Claire and Paul quickly turned around.
"John...and Sydney..." Paul said drifting off.
"What are you guys doing out here?" Claire asked.
"Same thing you guys are, thinking about what to do" Sydney said sighing.
"Figured anything out?" Paul asked.
"No, but I do have a question. How did you two find out?" John asked.
"I found your wedding ring in Sydney's bed and then we just watched you two sneaking around" Claire said.
"And when he said he lost his ring swimming, you were positive something was going on..." Sydney finished.
"Right" Paul said.
"Just let me ask one question, how could you do this to Cyn and George?" Claire asked.
"Claire-" Paul said.
"No, I think they should tell us" Claire said.
"You know how I feel about Cyn and Sydney really understands me" John said.
"I did love George, but now I've lost everything for him..." Sydney said.
