The Challenge--Introduction

This section focuses on the high costs to society of widespread scientific illiteracy, and the reasons for its persistence despite these costs. "The Intellectual Dimension" offers a hint of the powerful intellectual synergisms between scientific and non-scientific fields, thus demonstrating how scientific thought processes can contribute to advancement in very different fields. "The Use and Abuse of Science" demonstrates how scientific ideas can be twisted and abused by incompetents and demagogues. "The Persistent Misdirection" shows how students are pushed away from formal education in engineering and the sciences, and how this represents a market failure. Finally, "Arms and the Mind" shows how lack of knowledge of the limitations of science and technology can contribute to military defeat.
