Detail - List of internal conflicts within Zionist Movement and Israeli Politics
Goto Source for this Table - essay on Zionist efforts to create a Zionist democracy.
Founding of the State of Israel was a very challenging task. There were many conflicting perspectives and needs. The main ones were:
- (1) those who wanted a secular state vs. those who wanted a state based on Jewish religious law,
- (2) how to find a common ground between Israel's origins in radical socialist labor movements from Europe and the more recent waves of immigrants who are more focused on capitalist values and priorities,
- (3) how to develop a democracy with a respect for individual rights while being in an extended declared state of emergency, and often being in a state at war, and
- (4) how to relate as a democracy to an internal minority population that the majority in Israel associate with the enemies who surround them.
