This is just something for you to chew on today. It's something that I've been thinking about, and encountering a lot lately. I hope that it gets your brain tickin'...

Moral Relativism.

Do you know what that phrase means? The internet encyclopedia of philosophy* says that it is "...the view that moral standards are grounded only in social custom." It means that culture dictates what is right and wrong. This kinda goes along with the saying, "I'm ok, you're ok," or, "whatever works for you is cool."

This is a very predominate theme in modern thought. It seems to work alright, though. If I say that you can do whatever makes you feel good, or whatever you want to do, that frees my conscience to do whatever I want to. If you want to go out and smoke some crack tonight, that's cool-- it just means that I can do it also. It kinda means that if I give you permission to do something, I can do it, too.

This is not what God says at all. Although some passages may appear fuzzy in their interpretation of God's laws, God's laws are ultimately Black and White (cut and dry, right and wrong). Notice that in the definition in the Internet Encyclopedia, it says that these beliefs are based on Protagoras' thought that, "Man is the measure of all things." According to the Bible, man (humankind) is not the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Genesis 6:5

The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.

If our hearts are only evil all the time, how can we judge what is right and wrong without bias or adding our opinion? Read all of Genesis 6, or Romans 1 for more about how corrupt we, as people, really are.

*Yea. I know that internet sources can be pretty unreliable. This is just a quick definition for the sake of discussion. If you want something more reputable, you're going to have to research this one on your own.

The Verse of the Moment:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
