| This is my idea of a day well spent. First, call everyone that you think may call you or come by and tell them that you have a contagious "something-or-other" and a very high fever. It is best to familiarize yourself with several contagious ailments just in case someone is "rude" enough to ask what ails you. Next, prepare the following: The Best Damned Fried Green Tomatoes 1-2 right-off-the-vine green tomatoes (they have the yummy twang....when not in season, store bought will have to do) 2 cups cornmeal 1 cup flour 2 eggs 1 cup of milk salt and pepper to taste Combine cornmeal and flour together with salt and pepper. Combine egg and milk together, beat with a fork. Slice tomatoes thinly. Dip tomatoes in cornmeal/flour mixture, dip into egg and milk mixture, then back into cornmeal and flour. Set aside to "rest" for about 30 minutes......it allows the mixture to stick to the tomatoes better. Fry in about an inch of shortening (yea...I know it's bad for you, but oil leaves an after taste...and taste is what we are going for here...worry about the not good for you stuff tomorrow). Fry until brown on both sides....not burnt like Idgie's. Drain on a plate that is covered with a paper towel. (Combine with the following:) "Southern "Sweet" Ice Tea" 5 family size Lipton Tea Bags 2 quart saucepan filled almost to top with water Bring water to a boil, add tea bags, let boil for a few seconds then remove from heat. Cover and let steep for about 30 minutes. Add one cup of sugar to a gallon (yes, gallon) sized pitcher. Pour tea into pitcher and stir. Add water back into pot with tea bags still in it and drain into pitcher.....do this until pitcher is full. Stir. Let tea set for about another 30 minutes before drinking....I guess you could say it needs to age! Put ice into a mason jar (size of jar depends on thirst level) add a slice of fresh lemon....never, ever, use the bottled lemon juice...nor the stuff in those little plastic lemons (do they really get that stuff from lemons?).....use the real stuff. Now....put the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" into your DVD or VCR player. Pick up your phone and find the button that turns it off......turn it off. Retrieve the warm, fried green tomatoes and cold, sweet ice tea from kitchen....turn on movie, sit down and eat all of the tomatoes and drink most of the pitcher of tea. When the movie is over and the tomatoes and tea are gone.......TAKE A NAP! It's the southern way!! Enjoy!!! |
