  • Admission Process

What is the basis of admission to US univeristy?
Its purely based on your academic performance, univeristy you are studying, GRE score, statement of purpose and letters of recommendation.

How do I select which universities to apply to?
The univerisities can be calssified and selected based on the research interest and course offered, fees, chances of sholarship / assistanship, percentage intake, chances of secuing admission, number of Indian students, any personal preference for whatsoever reason.

A general thumb rule is to select a few in top 10 or top 50, a few wherein you have 50% admission chance and few wherein you are certain to be admitted.
Download this file (3MB) for an idea of university rankings. Warning: May be old data!

In brief what is the admission process to US universities?
Do visit the website of the university you seek admission to. They will have the detailed admission process; however you have to send the university the following documents:
    A) Application form (downloadable from univerisity website or can be filled online)
    B) Statement of Purpose (SOP)
    C) Letter of Recommendations (LOR)
    D) GRE and TOEFL Score sheet (Through ETS ONLY, the univeristy does not believe any other report)
    E) Applciation fees (either DD or in some cases can be paid online using credit card)
    F) Copies of sealed bachelor transcripts
    G) If applicable, bachlor degree (provisional will also do)
    H) Any other document as required by the university

What is Statement of Purpose (SOP)?
SOP is a document / essay you have to write that should clearly specify "Why you want to study at that univeristy", "your primary research area", "your academic background till date", and any other thing in specific you would like the admission committee to know that can increase your chances of admission.

Lots of sample SOPs are available, BUT DO NOT COPY ANY OF these! It has to be a genuine document, "YOU" are the focus, the hero of it! Make sure your SOP does not have all this

Whom to get the Letter of Recommendations (LOR) from?
You should have worked with / under the person who is giving you the LOR. It can be your subject faculty, project guide, summer intern guide,.. It helps if the person has credibility internationally, known for his contribution to engineering, is from your research area.

Should I hire a consultant for the admission process?
If you can afford it, go for it. Otherwise, its a simple (some people will find it exhaustive) and well defined process. Some search on google, links on this page, discussion boards, help from seniors will facilitate.

  • Visa Interview Preparation:

How much money to show in the bank for visa interview?
First year fees in liquid and satistafactory evidence that second year fees will be taken care of by other fixed assets, sponsors income, etc.

  • Options in other countries: APAC, EUROPE

Is US expensive or UK? Should I consider Australia?
Relatively, US still is a land of opportunities for students. Some courses in UK are one year and cost approximately the same as US. Australia, which was a riches place few years back has also opened up and mellowed down. It varies from university to university. A general rule of thumb is engineering students who do not get into US, try UK, if not UK then Australia.

    What about the EU countries?
Many European countries have started English courses as well. In some countries like Germany, there is no tuition fees, the student has to bear appx 300 to 700 Euros expense per month. France is also an emerging destination.
In the end, check the financial feasibility, do a good research (Google, Discussion Boards, some websites mentioned on this page) and take your decision.
Some good univerisites in EU are:
    London School of Business
    Insead, France
    Oxford University, UK
    Cambridge University, UK
    IESE, Spain

    What about Singapore?
Singapore has two very good universities. NUS (National University of Singapore) and NTU (Nanyang Technological unoversity). The detailed courses, admission process, fees and other details can be found on their website. The admission is competitive, fees is relatively softer than US, UK, elsewhere. Some even accept GATE score.
They are good for MBA course as well.
