The city's eponym is derived from the local Hindu goddess Mumbadevi. In the 16th c., the Portuguese named the area Bom Bahia which means Good Bay. The name was later corrupted to ''Boma m. After gaining possession of the isles, the British anglicised the name to Bombay'''. The city was renamed to Mumbai in 1995.
Bombay is a city of vast differences.. old and new, rich and poor, clean and dirty, dreams and reality and so on... its is this equilibrium that the city has reached that keeps it running and become the most sought after city in India. The bus and train system of Bombay might look primitive but is very efficient and very reliable. Her collection of neo gothic architectural buildings along with post modern buildings in downtown Bombay gives it a breath taking view. Makeing it truly the city of the future.
I live in the Western Suburbs in a place called Santa Cruz which is close to the Airport .... its is one of the most beautiful parts of Bombay after downtown. There are beautiful walkways, beaches, nightscape and lots of greens.
