"Janet I would like you to meet Shelaya. This is Janet Frasier, she's our healer. How's Daniel?"
"Four broken ribs, three broken fingers, a broken nose and cheekbone, a concussion, several loose teeth, various cuts and contusions." Janet knew she sounded automated, unfeeling as if she were reading a grocery list but at the moment it was her only defense against breaking down completely.
Janet was angerier than she could remember being in years. Angry that someone could intentionally cause such wreakage on another human being. Furious someone as kind hearted and gentle as Daniel had been the target of that destruction. If it hadn't been for the nametag on his jacket, she wouldn't have known the seemingly lifeless body was someone she knew, let alone a friend.
In her capacity as chief medical officer of the SGC Janet had seen more than her share of battle wounds, injuries other doctors couldn't begin to imagine, and had handled everything thrown her way with a detached professionalism. She couldn't allow herself the luxury of realizing these men and women were her friends. Not until she had finished her work. Sometimes that was easier said than done when it came to SG-1 and especially Daniel.
"There was some internal bleeding and slight dehydration. We're pumping him full of fluids, antibiotics and painkillers. It's gonna be a while but physically he's gonna be fine. Emotionally we'll have to wait and see. He may need to talk with a counsulor. I guess it could be worse considering he was on the receiving end of a helluva of a beating."
"Where's Colonel O'Neill?"
Janet nodded in the direction of Daniel. "Right where you'd expect him to be."
Shelaya, seeing the soldier, moved around Carter to approach the medical bed, her eyes nervously jumping over the clicking and beeping machines as if one of them might attack her. Yet her concern for the two men overrode her fear and she moved closer. Carter reached out to place a restraining hand on Janet's arm, stopping the petite doctor from interfering as Shelaya, her eyes closed, her mouth moving in a silent chant lay a hand tenderly on Daniel's head.
Sam's gaze jumped to her commanding officer. Slumped in a chair asleep, a blanket around his shoulders, the colonel's head lay on the bed near Daniel's hip. Even in his sleep, he clutched the scientist's hand as if afraid to release him long enough to rest. Suprised to see an IV attached to the hand covering Daniel's.
"Janet?" Puzzlement quivered in her voice.
"Just a precaution against shock." Janet smiled shaking her head slightly. "He hasn't left Daniel's side since Teal'c brought him here. I thought putting him in the next bed would be a compromise but as you can see..." she trailed off with a shrug. Janet turned worried brown eyes to Sam. "I've never seen him like this Sam...not even when Daniel was missing on Nem's world." Sam started to speak then nodding at the bed, mouthed the word later as Shelaya moved to Jack.
Kneeling beside him, gently stroking his hair, whispering so low they weren't even sure he'd have heard her if he'd been awake. Giving the two men a lingering look, she returned to Carter's side. "I can leave them now."
