"Jack...please..." Daniel coughed, fighting the encroaching blackness. The wall and the hands clenched around his neck were the only things keeping him on his feet. He had to reach Jack now! He'd tried every argument he could think of, always being sure to speak English. Not only didn't he know enough Vietnamese to carry on a conversation, he was certain that would only add to Jack's delusion. 'Think Daniel! You know this man!'
"I surrender." Daniel slowly raised his hands. There! A flicker of sanity in the brown eyes! Jack was a soldier but more than that he was a decent man with a strong moral code. "I surrender." He repeated.
"Surrender?" His voice dripped with sarcasm at the irony of situation. "You wipe out whole families for your own pleasure! You kill my best friend and I'm just supposed forget that and hand you over to be put in some camp where you'll be treated with dignity and decency because you surrender."
"No...no...I-I...Jack...look at m-me...I'm not...him Jack....I'm not Major...Hai...I'm Daniel!" The words, spoken through bloody lips were almost indistinguishable.
"Don't you dare!" The hand tightened around Daniel's throat. "Don't you dare say his name! You aren't worth the spit to shine his boots! He was-"
Was? Oh my God! Jack thought- "Jack...pl-please...it's me..." Daniel struggled against the hand cutting off his air. Like the breath of a whisper in his ear, the word floated before his fading vision. "Space...monkey."
Stunned, Jack stumbled back staring at the crumpled heap which sagged weakly to the floor. How the hell did Hai know about that stupid nickname? Had Jack called it out while he was begging for his friend's life? No he hadn't, he knew he hadn't! How? "Jack...this isn't...Nam..." Daniel struggled to draw air into his burning lungs. "Apakia...we're on..." His voice faded as Daniel lost his fragile hold on consciousness sliding into merciful blackness.
"Hear my words! Do not always believe what is before your eyes. Seek out the truth inside you." Jack whirled at the voice, knowing there was no one there. That voice...he knew.... "Hear me O'Neill. Listen well for he speaks the truth. Listen with your heart."
Teal'c's hand tightened around hers and Sam let a bud of hope begin to blossom as Jack hesitated, his expression bewildered.
Daniel? It wasn't possible? It was just a trick! Something the coward could use to save- "NO!" The voice. That woman's voice! He'd heard it before. Warning him about something. Where? Apakia? What the hell was Apakia?
"Look with your heart O'Neill!" Just what the hell was that supposed to mean? Backing away, using a tree for support, he slid to the ground never taking his eyes off his enemy. "Look deep inside O'Neill. The answers you seek are there." This was too weird! Sleep deprivation. That's what it was! He'd seen some of the POWs after they'd been released. Heard their stories of abuse and...That wasn't possible! The war was still...NO!
