"We can't be sensitive to the needs of others if we don't know what they are. Listening involves creating a dynamic wherein people feel that it's safe to share personal information. If people feel they will be subject to ridicule, or that their needs will be disregarded, those needs are not likely to ever be expressed in the first place."   -   Someone Worth Listening to.... The gay rights bill
This week, Stabroek News revisited the issue of the Sexual Orientation Bill which was tabled again in a different form in the National Assembly. We asked the man/woman in the street whether they felt that the passage of this Bill would open a window of opportunity for persons to use that legislation as a justification for same sex marriages and adoption of children by homosexual couples.

Eunice Niles - Supervisor at a security firm: `I don't think that you should discriminate against a gay or lesbian person, but I believe that that lifestyle is an abomination to the Lord.
They are, however, human beings who have jobs and other responsibilities.
The discrimination law will encourage homosexuals to demand certain rights such as marriage. I believe that they should get jobs and other entitlements. Although I don't support discrimination against anyone, I can't support that Bill. What will
happen to the children?' (SASOD... Could this be because of the latest homophobic campaign...saying person GBLT are pedophiles?)

Abiola Burnette, Self-employed: `If the bill passes, gays will have
the right to get married to each other and they will have more rights
than everybody else.
(SASOD... How can anyone have more rights than another in a equal and democratic society? Guess we should just allow people to stomp on people of different sexual orientations? Should let hate crimes and homophobia prevail?)
Homosexuals should not be discriminated against, but I won't support the passage of the Bill. Once the Bill passes in Parliament they (homosexuals) will get rights to do anything they please. I think that they should be treated equally, but I wouldn't support the Bill.'
(SASOD...How do we get equality and anti-discrimination without protective legislation then?)

Mortimer Salisbury - Navigational Aids Technician: `I am against the
passage of the Bill. I am going through information which I received
from the Georgetown Ministers' Fellowship
(SASOD...the homophobia crew is more like it) and I am in agreement with this group, which does not support the Bill also.

Eugene Thompson - Pastor: `If the law is passed, people could say that they have a right to engage in a same sex marriage. They could also say that a same sex couple has the right to adopt a child.(SASOD.. How unfortunate is the "holy soul' for he is ignorant of Guyanese laws and Guyana's morals or is he subject to the homophobic war in a secular not religious state?)

Leyland Mingo - Private Sector Employee: `As a Christian I am against homosexuality, but I believe that homosexuals shouldn't be discriminated against because they are still human.(SASOD... at least they think people of differing sexual orientation are human...)

Roma - Housewife: `They (gays and lesbians) should not be discriminated against because they are human beings who have lives to live.(SASOD.. Thanks for sharing your humanistic views!)

Parmeshwar Singh - UG Student: `This Bill would give gays and lesbians the confidence to come out. It might also cause people to be more tolerant towards homosexuals.(SASOD.. tolerance shows a real democracy!)

I don't believe that they should be discriminated against. If they respect me I will respect them. The Bill should be more explicit. The less words you put into a Bill the more vague it becomes and the more open to interpretation it becomes. The more defined you make it the better for you and the country. I'm not sure whether the passage of the Bill is the right thing.'

Shavon Wilson - Private Sector Employee: `All of us are human and deserve not to be discriminated against. God created everybody to be different.(SASOD..First Christian to admit this.. a true believer!)

If a person has talent in a particular area, he or she should not be prevented from working. They should be allowed to stay on the job. If the Bill could lead to marriage of gay people or adoption of children by gays, it should be reconsidered.'
